Why didn't anyone smoke on "TOS?"

If people want to relieve stress, why not just masturbate? That's got to be more fun than smoking and it also prevents testicle cancer from what I have heard. I'm not sure if their is extra health benefits for woman though.

Jason
You're right it doesn't relieve a woman's testicle cancer risk or in the case of men without balls, theirs either.

I suppose the key difference there is it wasn't in the federation, it wasn't part of the utopian future, it was a portrayal of a world based on 1920 Chicago, where cigarettes would have been the norm.

I think they were pretty thorough at not showing any smoking, but

this looks like it could be a cigarette butt to me under the card table, in "A Piece of the Action," complete with the ash mark where it may have been stamped out:

Sure, but that example makes sense within the context of that episode. A Piece Of The Action is one of the episodes where they could have legitimately shown smoking.

Until it ruins your health, or until the money drain of sustaining a chain-smoking habit takes its toll on your finances. Remember, Nimoy died of a smoking-related illness, COPD, even though he'd quit decades earlier. The habit ruined his lungs, and it probably wasn't good for his heart or his blood pressure either, hence the danger of smoking and stress combined.

And messes up the voice as well.

Not necessarily. It is an alien planet, after all. The books the Horizon left may have been amazingly enough detailed to let them learn how to build Earth-style automobiles, buildings, phonographs, radios, clothing, etc. out of indigenous materials, but they wouldn't necessarily have an indigenous plant species that was analogous to tobacco.

^^^Many cigarettes in film these days aren't real tobacco, but cloves (John Hamm described them as "Terrible. They taste like a mixture between pot and soap."

That's interesting. I did not know this was the case. Why is that?

Not having been a smoker myself, I'd always thought that smoking helped to ease the pressures and stress of everyday life?

To that I think I'd say "how about some f-ing excercise, bruh??"

^I've been exercising for over a year and I can't say that it helps to ease any of my pressures or stress. Actually, I continue to find the notion of exercising stressful "Oh, I'm going to hurt after this." :p

I have noticed that people who smoke do tend to have deeper voices. That could be part of the reason Leonard's voice was lower. Age will also alter a voice. (an aside. I knew Leonard was a smoker, but I never knew he had a drinking problem (nor did I know he wore dentures?)

I feel ya on the exercise thing. But...
It's gotta be more productive than inhaling poison shit into your lungs to give you a temporary chill. Hahaha!

I didn't know about the drinking until I read "Leonard." And I've devoured Star Trek material since I was able to walk.

Shatner talked about it in Up Till Now. He may also have talked about it in that Mind Meld DVD he made with Nimoy -- not sure, as I don't have that. Is Leonard worth reading?

I didn't remember it from Up Till Now, but I read that when it came out, so it's been a long time.

I'd guess you'd like Leonard...it's a pretty fast and interesting read. Is not a total rehash of everything we've heard before...so in that way it was of some value.

I have an Amazon gift card burning a hole in my pocket, and it's available for cheap used -- ordered!

"Amok Time" could have been over with by the time they came back from the opening credits.

I've always assumed Spock needed some kind of sensual reunion with T'Pring as well as a sexual bonding! Strange that after the events on Vulcan he didn't really get either unless it relaxed him after they touched hands?
