Why didn't anyone smoke on "TOS?"

^I think cigars smell even worse than cigarettes, although they're both awful. I guess pipes are the least objectionable in smell to me, although far from pleasant. (My father smoked a pipe in my youth, although eventually he stopped doing it when I was in the room, and then eventually quit.) As for pot, I find it unpleasantly pungent, but not as bad a smell as tobacco. I don't much care for any really strong aroma except certain foods, I guess.

Pot stinks. I never could stand the smell of it.
I am led to understand by friends who do smoke that this means the smokers in question are using really, really awful varieties :p

If they need to get high; just stick to pills. Doesn't pollute the air.
Gentle reminder that Elvis Presley ended up face down in Graceland cause of "stick to pills"; he was ironically anti-drug, to the point (for anybody that might not know) of attempting to convince the President of the United States to make him a DEA agent.

Not the best way to go about achieving altered consciousness!

My technical knowledge of 1940s to 1960s TV recording and broadcasting methods is limited. I know some were destroyed because the media used disintegrated quickly. Others because they reused tape over and over again to keep costs down. The early episodes of the Tonight Show, with Johnny Carson are gone as far as I know. Somehow several episodes of the Spike Jones show still exist and long with some classic comedy routines from the 1950s to 1960s, as well as some stuff from the 1940s. I also know that some grades of film were really good in the 1940s. Expensive, but good. I've seen color home movies does on Kodachrome 10 that have color that makes it look like it was filmed last week, when in fact it was recorded in 1941.

It was a successful attempt, as he had the badge to prove it. There is even a photograph of Elvis and NIxon taken just after Elvis was sworn in.

When It comes to pot I have always wondered how true it was in terms of helping creative types be creative. You always seem to hear about writers or artist talk about it in terms of it helping them find inspiration.

A gas station cigar will smell awful. A quality cigar smells glorious (regards to John Colicos).
Smoking would have looked all wrong in utopian Trek. However, it looked right in style on UFO, the sci-fi show where EVERYONE smoked, and heavily.

Pot stinks. I never could stand the smell of it. To me, it's another forum of smoking which I could never stand personally.

While it may indeed have medicinal uses, it's just a way for people to get high. If they need to get high; just stick to pills. Doesn't pollute the air.
I agree. Why pollute the air around you? Can't stand to be around any of that excrement.

Not having been a smoker myself, I'd always thought that smoking helped to ease the pressures and stress of everyday life?
JB

There are ways to relieve stress that don't involved filling your lungs with toxic fumes.
The idea of smoking anything is repugnant.

Yup. My parents smoked and I was subjected to second hand smoke for many years. Hmmmmm.....I wonder why I have minor respiratory problems?

If people want to relieve stress, why not just masturbate? That's got to be more fun than smoking and it also prevents testicle cancer from what I have heard. I'm not sure if their is extra health benefits for woman though.

Kinda context dependent....not great in the workplace or in public places, also has inbuilt issues with diminishing returns and finite recharge time.

Plus TOS would have been a very different show if characters kept on tugging one off every time they found themselves in an awkward or dangerous situation.

So if one were to, say, hit some sticky space weed and then rub one out, one could relax and prevent cancer simultaneously.

The future is glorious!

They won't let me do it in public.

Some of them are still looking for it

Why didn't anyone masturbate on TOS?

"Amok Time" could have been over with by the time they came back from the opening credits.

Yeah, but once Spock read the pamphlet on how to do that, he'd be on the bridge saying to Kirk things like, "Data on the life form? How should I know? Is my shift over yet?"
