Why did the Federation rename Terok Nor to "Deep Space Nine"?

Without knowing what I'm talking about....

Naming the station DS9 gave me the impression that
a) It was in deep space, like far point was in TNG's premier
b) It was administrated by Starfleet (ie, funded and all that headache)
c) It implied a connection between Starfleet and a still war-torn Bajor
d) Starfleet had something to do with Bajor's management of Cardassian Withdrawal (if not actively facilitating it once catching wind of it)
e) Starfleet has a naming convention for bases and stations of various sizes and distances.
f) It was way out in the boondocks to service starships on exploratory and security missions.
g) Bajor didn't need it beyond security reasons, certainly not for leisure expeditions.
h) Deep Star Space Station B5 Starbase Nine would cost too much in typewriter ribbons, and Space Base Larry was just too ahead of its time. (But something to think about for the next ISS).

I find DS9 to be an odd thing to call it, as the station technically isn't Starfleet. It belongs to the Bajoran Militia, with Starfleet there to administrate, so wouldn't it have a Bajoran name instead--especially after it was moved to the entrance of the Celestial Temple.

For all we know, "Deep Space Nine" officially only refers to those spaces within that belong to Starfleet... Much like "Starbase 74" might be but a few dozen decks and a couple of piers inside the vast mushroom space station that for the most part is a civilian orbital city.

Not necessarily. If there is an agreement that SF would operate the station within the purview of Starfleet operations, they might well be in their rights to name it what they want. It certainly worked that way in the Destroyers for Bases Agreement: Churchill got destroyers, Americans gave new names to places in Canada and the Caribbean (and of course, put soldiers and sailors there).

I hadn't thought of it that way.

The Federation grants Quark a rent free arrangement for his bar. It's not the Bajorans. Clearly DS9 is run on Federation coin.

That's if my memory serves me correctly.

For all we know, Quark has to pay both parties. And Sisko generously allows him to skip one half of it.

I recall in TNG at one point hearing about 'Deep Space 5'. There's a numbered series of space stations outside or on the frontier of Federation space.
