Why did everyone hate "Faith of the heart"?

I don't like it because it's about 'faith', a belief system that involves one to believe in something without proof. It's a little too religious for something to be in Star Trek.

"I've got faith to believe"
"I've got strength of the soul"
"I've got faith, I've got faith"
....
....
....

Ya, that sounds like STAR TREK to me.

'Faith' in friendship.

'Faith' in loyalty.

'Faith' in dedication to duty.

'Faith' in community.

That actually sounds exactly like Star Trek.

Joe, loyal, friendly, dutiful communist

I like that whole idea of of a song about loyalty, dedication and the friendly community message you're telling me about. Unfortunately, none of that is in the song! It's all about "Today is my day and no one will stand in my way! Haha!"

I know what faith is, and more importantly I know what dedication, loyalty and community is. I don't need faith to believe in that because we have them already.

according to me, star trek is an analogy to the faith in humanity.
Another example on what the song should be like. I like the idea of Star Trek being about faith in humanity, just don't put any faith in Archer or else you're in for a "Strange New World" of hurt.

I liked "Faith of the Heart" for the opening. I think the lyrics reflect the determination and vision of the trailblazers we see in the images that flash by. I always found the whole package to be uplifting and optimistic, which is very "Trek" to me. Especially during Season 3, when the crew's determination to prevail against increasingly dire odds was the only thing that kept them going.

If TPTB had chosen an instrumental opening, I think "Archer's Theme" would have been a good pick, under Bakula's narration of "Space, the final frontier..." which I really like.

Plus, "FotH" was one of the few REALLY out-of-left-field, "not your father's Star Trek" things the Beebs did with the show aside from no force fields or tractor beams in this era of history. They certainly lived up to the "not your father's Trek" hubbub when it came to the theme.

^ That's true. Of course, what they ended up with was something that sounded like "your older sibling's dramatic but uplifting movie." Honest to God, the first time I heard that song, I was out of sight of the TV and I didn't know that my husband had changed the channel to "the new Trek show," and I thought to myself, "Has he turned on a family drama or something? That's odd. He doesn't normally like that stuff."

I even - I swear, swear, swear this is true - wondered for a couple of seconds what it was a commercial for.

I understand that they wanted something different - I even approve of that idea. But you know, "different from the usual Trek" doesn't necessarily mean the same thing as "different from the usual stuff on TV." It doesn't sound like Trek, but it doesn't sound like something new and different, either.

:guffaw:

Sadly, I thought the same.

I actually slightly preferred the use of 'Wherever You Will Go' that they used in the commercials if they wanted something different and rockish. Of course, then it got overplayed on the radio, and it's still not great...

I always loved how they put Decker and Ilia's theme from TMP in Voyager's main credits theme.

I don't hear that when I listen to the tracks. There's a certain similarity, but they're different melodies. Go back and listen to them both and then see if you still disagree.

If they'd chosen to continue with taking a track from one of the movies to use for the theme (such as the ST:TMP theme being used for TNG), I'd have liked to have heard the opening theme from First Contact or possibly an extract/adaptation from the second half of 'The Mountain' from ST:V (track 1 on the soundtrack).

Because it's a ROD STEWART song?!

That and the opening theme is supposed to be orchestral. You can still have it more reminiscent of our century and be ORCHESTRAL!

Ugh it just sucked balls.

The Mirror Universe episodes' theme rocked and was fun. Shame they couldn't have tweaked that to make it a smidge less "evil" and used it in the rest of the show.

As a song, I really liked it. I find myself humming it at odd times during the day.

But as a Trek theme...I dunno. It's along the lines of the soundtracks for STIV and STVI. Now, don't get me wrong -- I loved both and bought them as soon as we left the theater after seeing each movie (I'd have to turn in my soundtrack junkie badge if I hadn't). But there's something un-Trekkish about all of them.

Now, the soundtrack itself -- during some cues, I'd hear bits and pieces that made me thing DS9, and at other times, it was very similar to TNG (natural, considering the composers). I downloaded the entire album from iTunes not long ago.

At least it was REALLY different for a change. The Beebs were too predictable and repetitive much of the time with the franchise, but if nothing else ENT had a different musical feel.

Yep, with the theme song it became "your grandfather's Trek".

Or...at least your metrosexual uncle's Trek.
