Shannon was a male name, like,Kelly, Taylor, Beverly and dozens of others. Now its unisex, but that was not always the case
There are men who's names are pronounced Michelle so,
I don't think anyone was trying to make a huge point with the name. I mean writers care about names, there is usually a back story, writers have an imagination. No one cares THAT much about names but apparently, the names in the first draft of the Alien script were so stupid they were re-written.
But beyond that, I don't think the name matters. Her name could be Shera or Dan....

I think most people agree it's just a Bryan Fuller thing, which given his tendency to do it again and again feels like a bit of an old gimmick by this point but it's really not a big deal.
I just don't get why he never does it the other way around. Sally Lorca should be a thing.

I don't know, Sally's a terrible name to go with Lorca. Maybe something like Helen, or Heather Lorca, maybe Sonya Lorca. Hmm, I'm not sure those work either. Lorca's a hard name to work out with anglicized first names.
Give him an Italian male name like Andrea or Simone.

To whom my great grandmother said we're related, so, yeah. I haven't found him in my family tree, though, so who knows?

Okay, guys, get this: George Michael. His birth first name is Γεώργιος, which in Latin characters is spelled Georgios - one letter off from Georgiou. And the timing is about right for the names to be in honor of his passing?

Or it's imply her name, along with some other real-life females named Michael, such as actresses Michael Lerner and Michael Michelle.
The name Michael for females is not that common today, but there was a time in the early 1900s that it was relatively common - and in the future (such as 2256), maybe it will become relatively common again....Or not. But it would still be a "not unheard of" name for females.
