Why Burnham is named Michael.

Why does it matter? Her name is Michael, get over it.

For what it's worth, names can change over time. I had a male teacher named Stacey.

It's true...just think of how much names have changed since your grandparents.

Leota, Ethel, Wilson, Barry...etc. None of those names are popular now.

Think of the changes that will occur in 250 years. They'll be naming babies "7" and "Soda."

Speaking of insecure people...;)

I've seen names change over the course of about twenty years.

Ouch. :( (A Michael here.)

You don't like the sound of it? Which pronunciation though? English, German or something else entirely?

Just the English version I don't like. Come to think of it I think most English names sound pretty rubbish. Not a fan of the sound of the English language in general. Blame it on English r, a, w sounds. Sounds like they're constantly suffering from slurred speech because they're drunk.

German Michael, French Michel or Italian Michele are just fine to my ears.

I do love the sound of my Italian mother tongue but contrary to popular belief German also can sound very pretty and delicate. Germans do not actually speak like Nazi caricatures.

Gee, I read the op’s question as why she’s called Michael in universe, not why the creator(s) chose the name. Maybe she’s named after her father or someone significant to the story (or backstory).

It's because that's what her parents named her, they probably had a reason but it's not important to the story. It's as important as why she has a particular hairstyle or favorite song.

Yep, In real life we have women named Micheal. I am a male Named Shannon, it happens.

But it might be part of the story - that's what I thought the discussion was about.

Maybe her parents reaaaallly wanted a son, and naming their daughter "Michael" was the closest they were gonna get. :D

It's not part of the story, it supposed to speak to our times. To remind us let go of our preconceptions regarding gender. Names, roles, etc. It's probably the most Star Trek thing about this sad production so far.

I think the reason is clear. The entire reason she's named Michael is so that at some point Harry Mudd can yell "Michael!!!" as a meta-reference to The Office. Case closed.
"You miss 100% of the shots you don't fire first. -- Wayne Gretzky" -- Michael Burnham

Maybe, who knows at this point in the story. It’s perfectly valid to discuss in the context of the backstory.
