Why Burnham is named Michael.

I believe she's named after her father. And Fuller's shows often have a female character with a tranditonally male name.

We know why Kirk was named James, and why Trip was named Charles, and have a pretty good idea about Worf, but every other main character has a question mark on why they were named what they were named. Maybe she's Greek Orthodox and was born on the Feast of St. Michael (September 29, aka Michaelmas). If so, happy birthday, Commander!

I think the reason is clear. The entire reason she's named Michael is so that at some point Harry Mudd can yell "Michael!!!" as a meta-reference to The Office. Case closed.

Oh, this again.

I don't like the name. I think traditionally female names sound better. I don't like the name for guys either, I just feel it doesn't sound great.
Having said that, there's nothing wrong with naming her that.

I just wish Lorca's first name were Lisa then. Or Gabrielle.

You mean like the feminine of Gabriel? Least he gets the angel bit. The names are kind of clumsy with their multi-purpose references. Georgiou too.

It's a Fuller quirk. Charlotte went by Chuck in Pushing Daisies. Also in the 30's and 40's it was trendy to give female characters male first names. Bette Davis and Olivia De Havilland played sisters Stanley and Roy in "In This Our Life" from the early 40's. Also the mom from the 70's mega popular Waltons show was an actress named Michael Learned.
