Who's your favorite new character?

I think Adira's story would have worked somewhat better if the correct pronouns had been revealed earlier, while they still had more to do before being sidelined to make more room for the designated main characters. More awkwardly, I already knew what the correct pronouns would be, thanks to the rather boastful advance publicity.

I was afraid such a pioneering character would be wasted in Discovery, but I think Adira is actually one of the most Star Trek Trek type characters. That's why they fits so well with Stamets; not because both are queer, but because both belong in a better show!

They're 16 and still at an age where they're trying to figure themselves out, so I have no problem with them coming out when they did.

What you're basically saying is you wish they were on another show because you don't want to say anything good about Discovery and this is making you have to. Too bad.

When you see something good in Discovery instead of saying "Maybe there's more to this show than I thought. Maybe I should reconsider what I think of DSC?", you think, "No! I don't want this to be on Discovery!" What you're saying is you want the show to be worse because you don't want to see it as anything else. You don't want to admit there's anything else to it. Again, too bad.

Count me in on Vance. I will be very, very pissed-off if they decide to take him down the Bad Admiral trope.

So far, he's probably the best portrayal of a Starfleet flag officer we've seen in any era. Ross in DS9 wasn't bad but both him and Forrest in ENT were largely there to facilitate the actions of the core crew.

Vance obviously has that role too but he feels different to both of those characters. That's possibly because he's written in such a way that he is also something of a conduit for both exposition (to the audience) and integration (for the Disco crew). Overall, however, Vance comes across as an experienced leader of an organisation under pressure (albeit one who's somewhat weary of constant firefighting). Oded Fehr totally owns the character in this respect. :techman: It was good to see the more human aspect of the character in Terra Firma (Part 1), both his decision to allow Discovery to go and his explanation and advice to Saru.

In the bigger picture, it seems odd at times to have the Fleet Admiral / C-in-C be quite so involved in day-to-day operations. That may be just because they recently had Clancy in Picard (not unreasonable, given Jean-Luc's ability to go straight to the top) and it didn't occur to them to make Vance anything other than the C-in-C. However, it may also be an indication of just how badly the Federation and Starfleet were been hit by the Burn, and just how truly limited Starfleet's resources still are in 3189.

It's worth remembering that if the Burn was well over 100 years prior to the arrival of Discovery in the future, then none of the current characters were around and that time; none of them had direct experience of those events as most wouldn't even have been born at the time. Even if Vance is significantly older than he looks and is now, say, 70 years old with 50 years of service in Starfleet, then he would be joining a much reduced Starfleet something like 90 years after the Burn -- that's three or four generations later! All Vance has known is the struggle to continue and survive, he has no direct experience of the great ages of exploration and expansion that Starfleet knew in its golden ages. In fact, I'd really, really like to see them explore this aspect of the character; a story incorporating this could make for a great way to help the Disco crew and the wider audience get their heads around the enormity of the current situation. The Disco crew will have no experience of the ages of Kirk or Picard (but they do know Pike...!) and they can get a feel for Starfleet's subsequent history in the years after they jumped.

Kovich is also an interesting characters. He's wearing civilian clothing and Cronenberg describes him as "an interrogator who’s also kind of an academic historian. He plays his cards pretty close to his vest" -- but he's also wearing a Flag Officer Tricom badge with Commodore rank markings. Is he Starfleet Security? Section 31...? Hopefully we'll get to learn more!

I also like Grudge -- not a character exactly but I have a Maine Coon too...!

Kovich is probably the most interesting character. Vance could be good, but I would like to see him "get out more". Right now he's kind of the Zordon of the cast, telling Discovery what to do and allowing various missions. They need to flesh the character more though.

My concern is more that in 10 years people will think it's weird because we'll have invented a new gender-neutral third person pronoun to replace the awkward use of "they."

I really hope we do somehow invent a replacement for they. I'm still stuck on the plural/singular aspect of it, and I was thinking the other day what if a person who wanted to be referred to as "They" were part of a group project, like in school or something. When you use the word, "They" are you referring to the group or to the individual person. Would it then be considered "They, They"? I'm not trying to make fun, I'm just confused.

I don't know if this will help but for me context makes a huge difference. When I'm writing documentation and I use they it is fairly clear that I am writing about an individual and specify it as such. For example a note I might make is "So&so didn't so up for their appointment. Staff will follow up to support their engagement." So, I am highly specific to context to make sure it's clear.

Hopefully that is clear.

I have to agree with you. Adira's character screams Star Trek.

Is it weird that their most interesting character is a marginal holo-data-construct created solely for exposition-info-dump - Lieutenant Commander Yor, an alien, parallel U alternate reality 24th century, displaced Time Soldier, who is dead.

Where do I click to watch his show?

I'm a big fan of Book this season. I liked the actor after seeing him on Supergirl and Nightflyers, so I knew he could bring it, but I thought the name "Cleveland Booker" was stupid. Still not a fan of it, but I'm more okay with it, especially after learning it's an alias. Hopefully we'll learn how he came to adopt that name. I've enjoyed Book's interaction with Burnham this season a lot. He brings out a different side to Michael and she's less intense around him and I like that. With Star Wars giving out spin off like candy these days I would be down for a Book spin off.

I also like Adira. I wasn't sure if I would when she was first introduced, as a teenage wunderkind, but the return to Trill is one of my favorite episodes this season, really in all of Discovery, and I also like how they've brought out a different side of Stamets and further how that's played into the Culber/Stamets relationship.

I like Vance, more so because I've liked the actor in just about everything I've saw him in. Don't have a firm opinion about Vance yet, but his uniform is snazzy. Jury is out for Osyraa, I want to like her, but I need to see her do some more wicked stuff. They need to let her monologue and chew scenery more. Jury is also out for Kovich.
