Count me in on Vance. I will be very, very pissed-off if they decide to take him down the Bad Admiral trope.
So far, he's probably the best portrayal of a Starfleet flag officer we've seen in any era. Ross in DS9 wasn't bad but both him and Forrest in ENT were largely there to facilitate the actions of the core crew.
Vance obviously has that role too but he feels different to both of those characters. That's possibly because he's written in such a way that he is also something of a conduit for both exposition (to the audience) and integration (for the Disco crew). Overall, however, Vance comes across as an experienced leader of an organisation under pressure (albeit one who's somewhat weary of constant firefighting). Oded Fehr
totally owns the character in this respect.

It was good to see the more human aspect of the character in Terra Firma (Part 1), both his decision to allow Discovery to go and his explanation and advice to Saru.
In the bigger picture, it seems odd at times to have the Fleet Admiral / C-in-C be quite so involved in day-to-day operations. That may be just because they recently had Clancy in
Picard (not unreasonable, given Jean-Luc's ability to go straight to the top) and it didn't occur to them to make Vance anything
other than the C-in-C. However, it may also be an indication of just how badly the Federation and Starfleet were been hit by the Burn, and just how truly limited Starfleet's resources still are in 3189.
It's worth remembering that if the Burn was well over 100 years prior to the arrival of
Discovery in the future, then none of the current characters were around and that time; none of them had direct experience of those events as most wouldn't even have been born at the time. Even if Vance is significantly older than he looks and is now, say, 70 years old with 50 years of service in Starfleet, then he would be
joining a much reduced Starfleet something like 90 years after the Burn -- that's three or four generations later! All Vance has known is the struggle to continue and survive, he has no direct experience of the great ages of exploration and expansion that Starfleet knew in its golden ages. In fact, I'd really, really like to see them explore this aspect of the character; a story incorporating this could make for a great way to help the Disco crew and the wider audience get their heads around the enormity of the current situation. The Disco crew will have no experience of the ages of Kirk or Picard (but they
do know Pike...!) and they can get a feel for Starfleet's subsequent history in the years after they jumped.
Kovich is also an interesting characters. He's wearing civilian clothing and Cronenberg describes him as "an interrogator who’s also kind of an academic historian. He plays his cards pretty close to his vest" -- but he's also wearing a Flag Officer Tricom badge with Commodore rank markings. Is he Starfleet Security? Section 31...? Hopefully we'll get to learn more!
I also like Grudge -- not a character exactly but I have a Maine Coon too...!
