How did they wussify Tom? Because he fell in love and got married and had a kid? Or something else? I think he was tamed....that's all

Sorry guys, I rarely post in here and forgot to come back as part of my regular rounds for a few days.
My apologies. However, I blame Akiraprise. He should have rounded my ass up and gotten me back in here. We have a habit of watching each other's backs over in Trek XI, but sadly, it does not appear that he cares after all.

Needless to say, I am heartbroken. All that flirting, down the tubes.
Anyhoo...on to the question.
Yes, I do think they wussified Tom Paris. Not because he got married, but because they made him much less of a rebel. I liked him as a rebel - that, to me, is what made him interesting and fun. Well, that and the Captain Proton thing. Loved that too!
But when they took away that, he became less fun to me. Less interesting. He became just another 'Regular Starfleet' Character. I still liked him...but he wasn't as interested to me personally as he had been before.
Most of my favorite Trek characters are the unorthodox ones - the ones with spunk...and maybe a bit of a temper....or a shady background or something. Anything that makes them different from 'Regular Starfleet'.
I like the whole Flawed Hero thing. In fact, I don't just like it - I love it. It is why I love DS9 so much...and it is also why I dislike TNG. Flawed heros are interesting heroes. They are attainable role models. They are people who rise above themselves and do the right thing in this situation and that, sometimes almost in spite of themselves.
Perfect people bore me.
Anyway, I loved Tom Paris most at the very beginning of the show. He didn't want to be there, he had a 'tude, and there he was...wearing the Starfleet uniform and being forced into positions where he ended up rising to the occasion, in spite of himself. That was great. And it was also something new. I don't think Trek had ever done a Starfleet character before who didn't want to be there - at least not one that was a regular cast member. TOS had no Starfleet characters with a 'tude...and neither did TNG, save Roe, who was only a recurring character. DS9 had lots of regular characters with 'tudes...but none of them were Starfleet characters, unless you count Sisko's occasional 'tude. Tom Paris was the first one I can think of, of the regular cast characters who thought the whole Starfleet experience sucked - he was a Voyager ORIGINAL.
I still liked him later on, and I really adore RDM as an actor...but the more 'Regular Starfleet' he became, the more I lost interest in his stories.
