I found Trip to be an unlikable jerk who constantly shot his mouth off without thinking, and a bigot who put down the Vulcans every chance he got.
How bigoted against Vulcans could Trip really have been; he was sleeping with one! Also, look how close he got to KOV in Fusion. This doesn't make sense to me.

Not much of what RandyS said so far (in this thread) made any real sense to me either. But I guess we all see things (people, films, shows, characters) the way we want to see them.
I can't think of any real(istic) reason for not liking Trip, finding him annoying and/or labeling him a bigot, and RandyS hasn't really made his case against him at all, but that's life. It's okay to hate fictional characters, even if they are all kinds of awesome :techman:

Mach5, middleman.

RandyS not only accused Trip of being a Bigot but he has said that Trip was useless Moron.

I might agree with RandyS that Trip is a little bigoted but a useless Moron I can't.

I could list all of the times that Trip was not a Moron but a talented intelligent and brave character. But I doubt if I would make a dent in RandyS' dislke for Trip.

Just achieving a chief Engineers rating marks him as outstanding.

But as Mach5 says you pays your money and you takes your choiice.

As for me I have always wished that the Trip character had been developed and treated with more respect by the writers especiallly in the first two seasons.

His bigotry seemed more based on how he felt certain Vulcans had spoken to or treated him in the past rather than a racial prejudice against the species itself. There's a difference. One can dislike certain types of people in a culture/subculture and still not hold all the members accountable for the behavior and actions of a minority within that group.

No one. I liked the cast, and saw no reason for killing one off for dramatic purpose or to give Archer's speech more meaning. It felt sloppy, which is why I gave TATV the middle finger and didn't watch it.

Travis. The character was so underutilized (developed), I wouldn't have been hugely disappointed to see the character axed.

He did have some good moments on the show, but the other characters made a bigger impact on me.

Travis had more buildup than TRIP DID in the earliest episodes what with all the lore surrounding his "boomer" childhood and upbringing. He was supposed to know more about deep space than almost anyone else on the ship but ended up doing less than even Rostov at times.

i agree with you. i think writers could use travis to explore the cargo ships world. it's one thing i always found interesting. i really liked "fortunate son", in an other hand, the episode where travis father died was very, very boring (i saw it twice, and everytime i felt asleep. oh, and the scene between travis and archer, when travis is crying the death of his father, that was so wrong).

I've always thought Travis would have been a good choice for first or second officer - or just let him talk more. His boomer experience might have contrasted nicely with Archer's straight-laced Starfleet perspectives.

Hoshi. The whole point of her character seemed to get lost in Season 3. In fact, she almost disappears altogether for long stretches of episodes.

I think Linda Park is super-cute and hawt...and always liked Hoshi for the most part. But she lost so much of her purpose at times and eventually became Travis with boobs.

Probably because the character was changed from how he was originally conceived--early drafts featured a "Lieutenant Joseph Mayweather" that was a slightly older character and someone who would sometimes disagree with Archer on how to proceed with new life-forms, IIRC.

I like Anthony Montgomery, but he was really too young for the role (as it was written orginally), and changes were made because of his age that eventually undermined the character, IMO. Reportedly, Mayweather was made an ensign instead of a lieutenant because Montgomery was quite younger than Keating's Reed...

But back to the original topic, while ENT was my least favorite Trek series, I liked the crew a great deal. I probably wouldn't have killed off anyone--but I would have returned Mayweather back to how he was supposed to be and shifted the focus from the big three more...

I have no problem with the character nor the actress. But if someone had to go, she seemed the most lost in the shuffle by the end of the series.

I think Archer's death as a self sacrifice would be the most affecting to me; especially if he died in the name of galactic peace -- perhaps even on alein soil.

I don't see the point in killing off Mayweather in the series finale as he was barely alive in the series proper.

Archer was destined to live, though. He was one of the driving forces behind the BotF in 2161 so from the moment Daniels first starting giving him hints about his destiny I sorta knew he wouldn't die in the final episode of the series unless it was a poignant flash-forward taking place years after the BotF.

unfortunately Sato and Mayweather - who both should have been much more central characters got lost. Travis had the most experience with living and working in Space and Hoshi would have been irreplaceable with the ability to communicate with non-humans - most of space is evidently peopled with non-humans . . . much as I liked and admired Trip his death does make a terrible logic. *ducks and runs away*
