that's true. Frakes directing would be hard to believe (trying to think of something more comparable that's happened :D)

I would love to see JJ Abrams back (since he's almost done with Star Wars: The Force Awakens)

James Gunn would also be a good pick, because he's good with special fx, action and humor (Guardians of the Galaxy, Slither) and we could probably see Nathan Fillian involved in Trek in some capacity :)

Shane Black would also be a good choice, although it'd be weird seeing a Christmas-themed Star Trek movie, since a few of his movies are set around Christmas (Lethal Weapon, Iron Man 3, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang)

Nothing will excite general audiences like "a film by Jonathan Frakes"!

If they go that route, they may cut the budget to $40 million, dust off the Captain Worf script and do it as a Direct-to-DVD release. Then bury Star Trek for twenty years or so because no one is going to give a shit about it after that.

Nail on the head. It's just not going to happen. Nor do I want it to.

Interesting - I think a Trek movie set at Christmas could be intriguing, didn't hurt the first two Die Hard films after all. The thing about the Trek movie universe is that a lot of them are very different in tone and content, and a Christmas one would be an unusual, unexpected direction. Not saying I want it to happen or anything, but it's an interesting idea nonetheless.

Tarantino is a Trek fan :)

I think he could make a great trek film, all he needs to do is tone down the violence and blood and all will be well. also his large fanbase will carry the films to great sucess. tarantino is also a critics darling. so it just might work.

Many posters on this thread have mentioned Brad Bird. Honestly, I had know idea who he was until I looked at his IMDb page. Having read it, he might be a good choice. But a director needs a good script and I hope the writers, who are complete unknowns (at least according to their individual IMDb pages), of 'Star Trek 3' have written a good one.

I'd prefer Brad Bird or Edgar Wright.

I'm hearing something about Frakes actually being considered... I actually wouldn't be against that. Considering all the directors who worked on the films and TV, Frakes is probably as good as it gets, so I'd welcome him. Provided he's given a solid script.

I think this post pretty much says why I'd be against Frakes. He's a caretaker, someone who works with the actors but has no real vision of his own. He's the definition of a TV director, handed a script and told to shoot it.

If Paramount is planning on going back to that structure making Trek movies, with the executives dictating the story to the director like during the Berman years, then I'd prefer they just not make any more movies. Just put Trek in mothballs.

Frankly, I think it's more important that a film has a strong script than it does a "visionary". For all the "flair" Abrams brought, the scripts still brought down much of the films for me.

In the end, I'd still prefer Brad Bird or Edgar Wright.

Sometimes the best director can fail badly at the box office because of the script, I mean a director can only do so much with the written page. Now that Frakes has formally announced he wants it bad, I'd support him - he definitely has the experience in film and tv director chairs.

He hasn't directed a film in a decade. Thunderbirds from 2004.

Directing is directing. Just because he hasn't done a theatrical film in awhile doesn't make him less qualified than Robert Orci.

But Orci has been around the production since its inception and knows all the working parts. Like I said before, it could be a spectacular failure or a spectacular success. Besides, Frakes wouldn't be directing a TNG film, he'd be directing the TOS characters. With a tempo and energy that is totally foreign to him where Star Trek is concerned.

Good or bad, with Orci directing it would be interesting. :techman:

The idea of Frakes directing a TOS story is what interests me because he would have to approach it differently from his TNG work and I'd be fascinated to see that. Having seen his TV work post-Trek, he's very good at adopting the style a show established. Just because Orci hung around on the movie sets a lot doesn't make him a more qualified director (ya know, cause he isn't one).
