More names for the list:

*Albert and Allen Hughes, although I'm not sure they direct as the 'Hughes Brothers' anymore.

*Katheryn Bigelow, although "Star Trek" might now be, well, beneath her. Unless she calls the shots...since she is an award-winning director now.

I think whether or not a director is bankable is more important to studios than the awards.

This next STAR TREK needs a director who can deliver a movie with plenty of High Octaine, High Voltage action. I would prefer Michael Bay to take on the project.

I'm sure Paramount would love, if at all possible, to make that happen. I've long felt that this franchise needs a big dose of Shia LeBeouf and more cowbell. Perhaps we could even get Uhura recast with Megan Fox. :techman:

Transformers had no such brand that was strong enough to justify or explain the kind of money those movies have made worldwide. Bay has done it all for them.

Give Trek to Bay; why not?

:guffaw::guffaw::guffaw:

Why not? I would love to see the mess he would make of Star Trek, it would be comedy!

Anyway, I'm thinking of a wildcard director, I'm thinking David Fincher or maybe even Peter Jackson. PJ is the king of grandiose and epicness in movies.

Due to #BringinRiker I'm starting to think Frakes might not be as impossible a choice as originally thought

Everyone knows FC is undeniably one of the best ST films (2nd only to TWOK in many opinions. Certainly before the JJ movies anyway) and his Trek movies (& TBirds but lets no mention that:)) aren't that long ago for Frakes to be too ‘out of the game’ in relation to modern film making techniques (as Nimoy and Meyer have stated they are). Anyway some of the guys they got/getting to direct Marvel movies hadn’t directed films for years (some hadn’t done big budget FX movies before, or even movies before just having done TV GOT etc.) Plus Frakes has been steadily directing stuff on TV (e.g. Marvels SHIELD). and didn't he visit the STID set? (therefore is on the Bad Robot radar) And lets not forget its the 50th anniversary movie so might be good to have someone from Treks past behind it (for Trek experience and Nimoyesque style publicity - Rikers directing the 50th Ann movie!)

So really should've put him on the poll!

Brad Bird absolutely but discounted him because of Tommorowland due next summer..(but then maybe he could still do it)

A hashtag doesn't get him on Paramount's list. He's not a possibility.
true, but one can still hope..

Why? His stuff really felt "paint-by-numbers". No one has any real idea what was Frakes work and what was mandated to him by the studio.

"I think fans want Star Trek to be an action movie." -Frakes, Jonathan Star Trek Nemesis behind the scenes

This is the same guy who was about to shit his pants in excitement for all the balls to the wall action in Nemesis and we saw how horribly that ended up. I also agree his direction is pretty paint by the numbers and would stick out like a sore thumb compared to how JJ Abrams directs. Imagine following up two fast paced movies with a movie that has the pacing of a first season Enterprise episode :barf:

Anyone who disagrees with me, watch the scene in First Contact when, in a devastating blow, the Borg travel back and assimilate Earth. POW! Earth is gone! The only way to prevent being one of those Borg is to go through the collapsing temporal vortex and stop them! Instead of being frantic, the cast looks like they're sleepwalking through their lines, bored out of their minds. "Hmmph. Well. I guess we'd better go back and stop them. Fuck. Got nothing else better to do." All the while extras in the background are being useless pushing buttons with blank expressions on their faces.

I'm not saying I want people running around freaking out, but a little urgency wouldn't hurt.

Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing Jon Favreau direct. He's worked with Bad Robot before (Cowboys & Aliens) and he handles action, humor and special effects well (Iron Man).

I thought it was more quiet professionalism, figuring it out, and what needs to be done. Besides Picards 'hold your course Mr Hawk! We must follow them back..repair whatever damage they've done!' seemed pretty urgent to me

Fair enough, but what about the battle of deck 16, when Picard, Data and Worf are getting their asses kicked by the Borg with crewmembers either standing around or with their weapons drawn, but not firing? A competent director could find a way to have these guys doing SOMETHING to make the battle look more engaging and the extras look less incompetent.
