Who Should Be Served First?

This is all so foreign to me. I honestly can't remember ever being in a dinner party or family dinner where people were "served," except when going out to restaurants (and I haven't noticed any particular pattern there, it just seems to be whoever's food is done cooking first). My family usually didn't eat together, and if so it was in front of the TV instead of around a table, but even when we did everyone served themselves from the food dishes on the table. The only "rule" that I followed was I didn't start eating until everyone had served themselves, but even this nobody actually cared about.

When I was kid, we had a much more formal regime for dinner time. My father demanded it, and my mother enforced it--where we sat at the table, how to hold your utensils, how to properly set a table, etc. I'm glad they did; it made many social situations a lot easier for me.

I think I only recall two really big table manners. Your surpose to have a napkin in your lap and your not supose to put your elbows on the table when you eat.

So nobody eats dinner like Bruce Wayne during his first date with Vickey Vail in "Batman 89" where you sit at one end and your date/guess sits way, way down at the other end and your Butler brings you food?:)

I lean towards guests first, then ladies first, though often it depends on what we're eating because it's not always the same thing.
(We also tend to put the condiments on in the kitchen rather than on the dining table so sometimes it's a case of whoever is ready first)

Well we also have to consider that we first have to serve Vaal first and bring some of our offerings to his cave head. Then we get to eat.

One person has said that the boss gets fed first - the boss is the cat.

In my household the cats get fed before the people. It does not stop them from begging for our food.
Cat gets fed first.

She doesn't beg for our food though - we're vegetarian.

Knife in right hand, fork in left. Never put your knife in your mouth. If using a soup spoon, spoon away from you and don't slurp. Always close your mouth when eating (especially important with soup). When finished, place your cutlery together neatly on your plate.

@Gov Kodos I've never seen those videos before, what are they from? Just watched another
They are from a film called 'A Christmas Story' It's the tale of Ralphie Parker's quest to get air rifle for Christmas. Ralphie is the kid getting his mouth washed out with soap.

I have a question somewhat connected. How many people still even eat at a dining table or any kind of table? My family mostly just eats in front of the tv and we don't always even eat in the same room. I mean when I was younger we might eat at the table for Thanksgiving or Christmas but that was about it.
When I was younger and my grandparents were still alive, my grandfather was usually served first.

Nowadays, the cat is served first. I usually eat in front of the computer, which is in the same room as the TV. I don't own either a couch or kitchen table, and all other tables are occupied by books.

My grandfather got highly annoyed if I read at the table, and after he died, it was a relief that I didn't have to abide by that anymore.

In my own house no one has eaten at the dining table in like 20 years.

At other people's houses in family.. thinking about it we only eat at a table if we're outside. I find the whole formal, at the table, head of the house at the end thing when I do experience it to be incredibly uncomfortable.

I've always had a round dining room table. Eliminates the "head of the house at the end" formality.
