Chris Pine as Kirk. He's free to do his own thing while occasionally channeling Shatner. His performance in Into Darkness was great. I can't wait to see where his Kirk goes next.

My favorite scene with him is the Brig scene between him and Khan.

"Let me explain the situation here. YOU are a CRIMINAL... I watched you kill innocent men and women. I was authorized to END YOU and the ONLY reason you are still alive is because I am allowing it. So SHUT YOUR MOUTH!"

Yep. The great thing about that scene is it's not done by the same Captain Kirk who thought it was a good idea to stash the Enterprise underwater and send Spock into a volcano. It shows the growth Pine's Kirk is going through as he starts acting more and more like a real commander.

I am a big fan of Pine's Kirk, for certain. Urban's McCoy is spot on, from his introductory speech all the way to his reaction to Kirk announcing the start of the 5 year mission.

However, my favorite character goes to Greenwood's Pike. He is warm, funny, a good leader, and, in my opinion, the ideal Starfleet officer.

I have to say, Urban to me is the best at channeling his counterpart. But I also don't want to sell Pine short, either -- there were more than a couple times in ST09 where he just *gets* Kirk. Bravado and swagger is easy, but I think Pine pulled off a great amount of nuance in a sometimes playful, always confident, captain.

I really hope the third movie has Pine outwitting a computer.

Kirk. I thought the toughest job for casting was finding someone to fill William Shatner's shoes and I think Chris Pine does a credible job of it.

I think Chris Hemsworth would have made a better Kirk.

He *did* make a good Kirk -- George Kirk ;)

Very much agreed about Greenwood/Pike. I could easily see him leading a fleet like it ain't no thang. Picard did it, Sisko did it, there's no reason to think Pike can't do it.

I love them all, but it's got to be Spock. Young, damaged, angsty and with a terrifying temper. And snarky. Very snarky.

"Are you giving me attitude, Spock?"

"I am expressing multiple attitudes simultaneously, sir. To which are you referring?"

"Out."

:rommie:

He has all my favorite quotes  so. much. sass.

Spock then McCoy - the same as my favorites for TOS. Spock has such a very different history playing out now, but has many of the same issues, his alienation from both worlds as a mixed race person, that's been explored really well. His status as an outsider and his vulnerability make him extremely interesting.
Urban is delightful in his personification of McCoy. I hope he gets a bigger part as he's been criminally underused so far.
Overall the new cast is good. I do like most of what's done with Uhura and her relationship with Spock. She does generally act unimpressed with Kirk which I find a little jarring and off putting given TOS's Uhura respected Kirk so much.

Urban as McCoy for sure. I also like Saldana as Uhura. The character is now a lead rather than a glorified extra. The whole cast has doe a good job, though.

Idk if Urban being the most similar for some is the point though. The question isn't who is the clone of the original.
The way I see it, reimagining a character in another reality means a new version of them that makes you see something new about the character, something added that the old series didn't have perhaps, all the while keeping the spirit of the old character. So in my reply of what's your favorite reimagined character I thought about the ones that have some differences and thus were truly reimagined for me using the potential of the old.
While I think Urban does a great job, I think his big problem is that unlike the others he's perhaps the least reimagined character.

So, nearly twenty posts in, and no love for Keenser, yet?

Oh, we are so back to dagger-points.

Fun question, though: think anybody knows his name is "Keenser" who isn't a Trekkie and didn't read the credits? ;)

I didn't until just now, and I've seen both movies twice each.

As for my favorite character, Bones. I just hope he has a bigger part it the next one. Kirk, Spock, and...Uhura? Just doesn't seem right.

Nu Uhura filling a gender lead role that was missing in TOS is good as well and I hope they make Nu carol another lead female. her character is likeable.

I hope they tell the Carol Marcus story. She and Kirk fall in love and do something that starship captains probably aren't supposed to do with the officers under their command. She gets pregnant and decides a deep space mission is no place to raise a child, so she transfers off the Enterprise back to Earth, leaving Kirk to choose between his ship and his family.

Its a modern world. I still can't deal with Magneto and Wolverine being front and center in the X-Men films. ;)

In all fairness to the X-Men films, Magneto and Wolverine were pretty much front and center in the comics franchise too.

But I like Uhura's new prominence (moreso in the first movie admittedly, but I love Saldana).

When I first started reading the X-Men, Magneto was a neo fascist Mutant supremacist and Wolverine was some guy who fought the Hulk, once! ;)
