This thread had plenty of conservative posts in it before Trump had his post-DNC meltdown and started attacking anyone who had ever wronged him even slightly like a character in an 80s high school revenge fantasy. They didn't go silent because anyone suppressed what they had to say, they went silent because there are some levels of batshit even they're not comfortable with being publicly associated with.

That's fair enough..... He did seem to have several meltdowns.

KIMBERLY GUILFOYLE: And what you’ve seen is a concerted effort, really — it’s like the most unholy partnership of all time between the Obama administration, Hillary Clinton, constantly making comments trying to bait Trump into saying something that will sidetrack him...

HILLARY CLINTON: Imagine, if you dare, imagine — imagine him in the Oval Office facing a real crisis. A man you can bait with a tweet is not a man we can trust with nuclear weapons.

The scary thing is that he could win. Stranger things have happened.

Trump comes across to me as someone who should be lead candidate of an extreme yet minor political party, not what is meant to be the mainstream centre-right party. I'm staggered that American politics has got so crazy, and it greatly concerns me. A cult of personality around a loudmouth ignorant bigot, that's just not right.

(Disclosure: I'm a British person whose voting behaviour places me on the centre-left.)

Yeah, anything is possible I guess. But I'm more confident now than I usually am in Presidential elections, and indeed more confident than I was at the end of July. Trump cannot win HIMSELF, because where are his votes going to come from? He literally is losing ground on a daily basis. He needs to gain in several demographics to even have a slight chance, and all he's doing instead is saddling his campaign with self-inflicted wounds. His support is eroding dramatically to just the rabid Republican and Tea Party base, and he's not doing anything to win over people his lost. He's just doubling-down on bullshit and red meat for his crowds. At this point, Hillary could lose Florida AND Ohio, and lose several states she's currently leading in, and still win. It's that bad for him.

The only way Trump can win is an external factor....if Hillary is completely BAD in the debates and loses to him (which is doubtful, since he has proven himself to be an imbecile when directly challenged by a sane person), or if there's a bombshell hiding in the emails that Julian Assange is waiting to release in October that sinks Hillary's campaign.

If everything goes smoothly, I wouldn't be surprised if she got 350 electoral votes (or more, since the Orange Clown has managed to turn Arizona and freaking Georgia into toss-up states) and he'll be stuck whining about voter fraud like it's 1960.

I think the last minute surprise is a distinct possibility. Who knows what they have up their sleeves?

Plus they keep saying that Hilary is physically sick and won't be able to make it (that is she'll have to desist). What if it's true?

Reagan very likely had early-onset Alzheimers in his 2nd term (good thing Glasnost was on by then). FDR had polio, was a chain smoker and drank like a fish, and had congestive heart failure in the 40's....and still managed to be the 3rd greatest President this country ever had.

I highly doubt Hillary is ill with anything more than what the average 69 year old is ill with. Conservative bloggers like to babble about dumb shit based on someone saying something. "Hillary is sick!" is literally the only thing they have to hold onto, since their candidate seems intent on torpedoing himself.

I hope you're right and that there's nothing to it.

Also, Eisenhower had a friggin' heart attack in 1956, before we knew how to treat them as effectively as we do now, and Nixon had to be President for several months while he recovered. That was way worse than Bush having a colonoscopy and Cheney being President for 2 days from his underground lair.

Are you starting to see now how ridiculous their scaremongering is over Hillary's apparent dire-straits?

Don't underestimate that. It can be very effective.

If you want to understand the roots of Trump's popularity, all you have to do is go on fox news and click on the article about the unrest in Milwaukee and read racist comment after racist comment. They think he will restore America to some sort of family-values-straight-white-Christian utopia that exists in their collective imagination....and there are millions of them.

Fox News mongering racism? Say it ain't so.

Is Trump trying to lose on purpose?

Not suggesting it but it is something I have heard around different places.
I don't think so. I think he really believes he is tapping into a disenchanted group of people who believe THEY are disenfranchised (in terms of being deprived of "their America"). He thinks that by whipping them up into a frenzy and hitching his train to them, he'll ride to victory. He loves it, because he can literally say anything and they lap it up. He can backtrack the next day, and they lap it up. He can say that the mainstream media doesn't understand or is against him, and imply that they're also "against" his supporters, which riles them up further, stoking that idea that they ARE the disenfranchised majority. He thinks that because they cheer for him, and express their anger at "the system," it's proof that he's winning.

He is so wrong it's almost sad. This is the same "bubble" that Bill Maher is fond of talking about, and that the Romney campaign lived inside for the whole campaign in 2012...complete unreality. What Trump is doing is worse: appealing to about 40% of the population who will give him fervent support...and alienating the rest. It is a losing strategy.

If he's as smart as he says he is, he'd be doing more than subtle sarcasm and doubletalk in his speeches. He would PIVOT and start appealing to the people he's lost. He's not doing that because he's a stupid narcissist. He thinks "That's what the loser McCain did and the loser Romney did. They're losers, and I'm gonna win. I'm gonna win so big and show 'em all that they were pathetic, and the country needed me all along. Just wait and watch. They didn't embrace the fringe. I am, because I'm smarter...and it'll be huge. Huge!"

He'll lose. Because the country's demographics have shifted, and surprise surprise, people actually would prefer someone who's not a loose cannon and actually understands why you can't use nukes, even if you've got them. Among other things.

Hillary Clinton will win.

Trump doesn't have the demographics. He's not very popular with women, minorities, or millennials, so he (luckily) he won't be able to reach a majority.

Donald Trump as President would be a disaster. The only good thing to come out of his campaign is that now I know who supports his rhetoric, so now I know who not to associate with.

I'd vote for Al Capone before I'd vote for Donald Trump.

Here's a collection of Facebook posts about my thoughts on the subject of Trump, when I finally just completely had it.

This was two-and-a-half weeks ago...

I've started unfriending Trump supporters one by one. I've reached a point where enough is enough. My stress level is going down already.

Never in my life has a candidate bothered me this much or have defenders of a candidate driven me this far up the wall (pardon the pun). The more ridiculous the things he says are, the more ridiculous people look defending him. It goes WAY beyond normal politics. Way beyond. And to see them justify it is insane. The candidate himself is insane.

For a long time, my thoughts were, "I'm not going to get rid of anyone just because of their politics!" but now, the thought process is from outer-space to me. These are not people I can interact with. The opinions, the defenses, and the hypocrisy is staggering. Doesn't matter if the KKK or the Russians support him or that he ran a fraudulent University, or said that Ted Cruz's father was in on the JFK Assassination, it just gets stupider and stupider and stupider. Let's not even get into the Wall or thinking a Mexican judge can't be objective. Or being on the cover of Playboy and having five kids from three wives. None of it matters. These supporters hold every other politician to exacting standards except Trump.

What else? He doesn't think much of John McCain because he was a POW and heroes in his mind don't get captured. Or the Muslim ban. Or pretending he wasn't his own reporter. Saying that women who seek abortion should be punished. Wanting to pull out of NATO. Wanting to take the families of enemies hostage when they're non-combatants. Thinking we need more torture because the torture that's already been used doesn't go far enough. Saying that he he has great respect for Kim Jong Un. He's pure evil. Like Jeb Bush said, he's the "chaos candidate". And there's a ton of other stuff I know I'm leaving out.

Oh yeah. Here's a *big* one I left out. When he pointed to a black guy in a crowd of supporters and singled him out to say that he has black support. Or that he'd cover the legal costs of anyone to beats up protesters. One thing after another after another.

You can be a business person without appealing to your base's inner Archie Bunker. And he filed for bankruptcy four times. I'd like a business person who was more effective.

I hope my conservative friends who won't vote Democrat or Green vote for Bill Weld on the Libertarian ticket. Romney might be (probably will be) endorsing him.

.
.
.

Needless to say, I'm voting for Hillary Clinton.

I don't trust either of them but I trust Hilary even less.

Also, this goes to show that who is voted in to Congress is just as important.
