Who has given up on DVD covers?

I threw away the packaging for TNG, DS9 and Voyager - not because of space, but because those packages are a pain to use (especially TNG). I got those Case Logic sleeves instead. Work fine, they do.

It's just something in me, but on my "big collections" I refuse to get rid of the cases. The TNG DVDs, for examples, are treasured by me so I refuse to toss out those cases to keep the sets "original."

What I don't understand is when a DVD's case comes packaged inside a cardboard outer shell which has exactly the same artwork as the case within it. That does not make a ton of sense, IMHO. It's just wasting cardboard for no purpose.

I kept my cases (in the closet), but I replaced them with these:

^ And it doesn't bother you that those OEM cases are so awkward to use? Wow. You got more guts than me. I hate having to unfold all those little flaps that the TNG boxes make you use. At least TOS-R's BluRay packaging is just like any other BR package...

Those cases remind me of the SG-1 cases, which are awesome. The current Babylon 5 ones are also awesome, which are kind of like those, but the width of a normal DVD case. The hubs on them are a bit tight though, unlike the ones in the SG-1 cases, which are perfect.

Yeah, just for the sake of "the collection" I like keep the ST DVDs in their OEM cases.

I understand. Just offering an alternative if you wanted one.

Yep. These were worth every penny. I think I paid $8 for 10 of them, and they hold 7 discs each. I then just print out the custom covers and there we have it. It looks good, takes up less space, and is easy to access. It's win/win!

From a space-saving POV, I can understand the desire to replace the original packaging with binders or slim cases. However, I find that I enjoy having my DVDs in the original cases on display. Same is true for my books. I like being able to see the collection, and when people come over, they are always drawn to it and browse for things they like or that they hadn't seen. I dunno... I just couldn't imagine throwing all of the packaging away.

Funny you should mention this now. I'm just about to switch out my commercial DVD cases with a combination of slim packs digitrays and ace cases. Digitrays are the DVD trays that Enterprise comes in, bound together on one side with tape. I just need to figure out how to make decent sleeves. For single and double-disc movies (not franchises!) I am switching to slim packs, and for my hard-core disc-count shows like Six Million Dollar Man and Happy Days (over 30 discs in each series) I will be putting them in Ace Cases, which look like VHS cases but have a sort of reverse spindle inside. Observe:

Biffette, where did you find the Six Million Dollar Man on dvd?

This is me exactly. I'm a collecter and I love being able to see my collection. It wouldn't feel right for me to replace them.

^^ Same here.

^ I don't really mind the plastic shells that Enterprise (or TAS) came in. They will at least stand up. The TOS shells used to drive me crazy until I taped some heavy metal washers in the bottom to weight them down. Now they will stand up most of the time. :bolian: But out of the Trek packaging, I can't stand the TNG sets. I can never get the DVD book out of the damn box. I also HATE the boxes for "Six Feet Under". Their silly pop-up hinge thing is waaaay to fragile.
Come to think of it, all the Trek boxes are pretty annoying. And so was Northern Exposure, with that weird DVD parka that had to be unzipped.

Yeah, they're awkward to use and I don't like having to have several feet of open space to open up the box but it's not like I get into the thing everyday.

Regarding space-saving cases what I don't like about the idea of using those is having to print-out my own covers. The ink and paper costs alone makes it not worth it to me. I tried printing out DVD covers for my MST3K collection (which most of the covers were heavily black) and my poor printer cart. only managed to print off like four or five of them before being exhausted of it's supply of black ink. So I made my own covers to print off which where just plain white with the titles on the face and spine.

It still took a lot of ink and time to print them all of not to mention triming down the print-off to fit int he slim-line cases.

Bah! I prefer the original boxes to all of that time, work, ink and the OEM covers/inserts are at least made of high-gloss plasticky-paper stuff rather than standard letter paper.

Yep. Trek did not make it to market in the best packaging. Some of it is a real crapfest. But I am pleased to say I solved the issue with DS-9's crappy plastic packaging. I pulled it apart and adhered the disc book flaps to large pieces of clear sign vinyl. The vinyl acts as the hinges between the pieces. And once I cut it flush with the edges, you can't tell I have even done anything. Now they are much easier to open and permanently mended. The vinyl will outlast the DVD's.

And I LOVED the first couple of Northern Exposure sets! I thought the little parka was adorable with its moose shaped zipper pull. I admit I was upset that they went to an embossed cardboard for the rest of the seasons.

Where can you get ACE cases?

Edit: Oh wow, found it...pricey...they cost more than I paid for the discs themselves!!

Thanks to Axiom...I downloaded the movie database software.....awesome!

Thought I'd mention that being in Canada those damn bilingual covers made the decision easy.

http://www.rixgrafix.com/ strikes again, I see. :D I have the covers for DS9, Enterprise, Firefly, Star Wars (OT) and the LOTR EE Trilogy from there. I *much* prefer those multi-disc cases to the original packaging, especially for the DS9 seasons.

Yep! :D

After my Season 3 DS9 case drew blood and then promptly fell apart, I decided "Hmm, maybe this is the right time to buy those cases I've been waiting to buy." And so I did, and then I did it for TNG. It just looks far better than what it did (the designer of those covers did a terrific job!), and it's so easy to switch from DVD to DVD without a hassle. :D
