Who has given up on DVD covers?

Weird that this topic came up. My husband just informed me that he wants to ditch all of our cases, which makes sense, since we're moving, but it's something that never occurred to me. It just seems wrong somehow.

I let him buy a barcode scanner and now he's doing some crazy project that involves labeling all of them in some binder and doing inventory and he's going to attack our book collections next.

If you take in multi-disc sets then I guess I do have a few, too. Opps.

Yeah, most of my DVDs are seasons of TV shows. Those take up a lot of room (although I don't know why; shows like Buffy and Angel have their full seasons in regular size DVD cases).

My collection is quite small in terms of titles (maybe 110 maximum), but quite a few of them are TV show boxsets, and 2 of them are whole shows (the big Babylon 5 and Stargate SG-1 boxsets that Amazon do), so my disc count is probably ridiculous. I've got a Bond boxset too which has a disc of extras for each movie, so that's quite a few discs too.

Throw away the cases????

Quite a few of my DVDs have very nice cases (Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Aliens). Instead I'm in the process of ripping them all to my home server and storing the lot in plastic crates in the loft.

Besides finding the artwork on all sides of the cases more attractive than a binder, I find it more useful to have the information for extras and runtime on the back of the case than in a database. It's also easier for me to find something at a glance if I can see the DVD case. I won't say I'll never go to a binder system, but right now, it is not to my advantage.

I only have about 190 DVD titles (total numbers of discs is much higher), plus 18 Blu-Ray, but they are all alphabetized and also kept in a DVD database. I have to have the covers. My OCD would beat me down if I didn't.

One thing I would do if only I could be bothered is to rip/encode all of my DVDs to disk so that I wouldn't have to actually use the discs.

Yeah, I'd like to do this. But I'm too lazy too.

Is he available for hire? I'd kind of like someone to do that for me too.

Mind you, I don't actually have too many DVDs. I'd guess about 150 though actual discs must be more than double that. But it would be nice if they took less room, while still also being easy to find.

Oh, you wouldn't even have to pay him. I'm sure he's going to enjoy it. He's already written up some computer program and is just waiting for the scanner. Boys and their toys ...

Really though, we don't have some vast collection either. It's decently sized, but we're more into Netflix now and only buy series we really enjoy. I think we're going to leave the cases up on the shelves till the house sells and then ditch them.

I have to admit, it will be nice having our books catalogued. We're both bibliophiles.

I used to but all of my movies in binders (the type with the cover sleeve) but since DVDs stopped coming with the little insert on the inside to use in the binders I've mostly stopped using the binders and any new movie I buy just stays in its case. All my TV shows stay in their OEM packaging.

Well, to be fair, a lot of it is multi-disc sets. Farscape for example is 26 discs all by itself. I probably have 600 discs just in TV series.

Individual titles I probably "only" have about 400.

I only count titles. Counting the actual discs would make my brain catch fire. And to be honest, when I was keeping count, I never counted the television shows with the movies. Now I only count the television shows that are complete or current with releases. (Right now I think I have maybe 40 complete/current shows.)

And they do take up a HUGE amount of real estate. Before I sold my house last year, they had a room all to themselves and covered three walls, floor to ceiling.

I'm on the AstroSmurf Team. My DVDs are all in their original packaging and will remain that way. Although I am sorely tempted to get rid of those annoying plastic shells that TOS and ENT came in....

^ I don't really mind the plastic shells that Enterprise (or TAS) came in. They will at least stand up. The TOS shells used to drive me crazy until I taped some heavy metal washers in the bottom to weight them down. Now they will stand up most of the time. :bolian: But out of the Trek packaging, I can't stand the TNG sets. I can never get the DVD book out of the damn box. I also HATE the boxes for "Six Feet Under". Their silly pop-up hinge thing is waaaay to fragile.

The OCD completist in me has given up on DVD-covers-in-a-series being consistent with each other.
Like the DVD sets for "Frasier"? Eddie is on spin of the first couple of seasons and then he disappears for the rest. The only television set where each season differs that I can live with is BSG. They all look a bit different but at least the follow the same color scheme and look.

Well if it comes down to me wanting cases again they are online.

This is true. The best deal I've found is a site called Bags Unlimited. I only use these cases for the DVD's I'm making myself off my old and in some cases EXTREMELY rare tapes though. All my store bought DVD's are in their original cases and are fine (which the exception of the godawful DS9 sets, those are still in their original cases too, but I've used roughly nine miles of scotch tape to keep them together.) The way I see it, the store bought stuff is pre-labled. If not on the disks, then at least on the inside of the case or insert somewhere. It would be nuts to ditch them.

I moved all of my movies to a binder last fall. My kids movies are in a different binder, and all my tv shows are still in their original cases since most of the shows don't list the episode titles on the discs. It's cut down a lot of clutter in my house. Someday I'll get around to doing it to my cd's, but I'd like to thin that heard out a little bit. I mean really, who needs that many Survivor cds?

Funny you should mention this now. I'm just about to switch out my commercial DVD cases with a combination of slim packs digitrays and ace cases. Digitrays are the DVD trays that Enterprise comes in, bound together on one side with tape. I just need to figure out how to make decent sleeves. For single and double-disc movies (not franchises!) I am switching to slim packs, and for my hard-core disc-count shows like Six Million Dollar Man and Happy Days (over 30 discs in each series) I will be putting them in Ace Cases, which look like VHS cases but have a sort of reverse spindle inside. Observe:
