Who has given up on DVD covers?

John200

Lieutenant Commander

And have gone to DVD binders to save space.

I have kept some of the covers.

I have a giant binder, but I kind of regret getting rid of the original cases. I am thinking of creating several smaller binders and labeling them alphabetically. The biggest problem with some of my TV shows is that that the individual discs weren't labeled, so I have no idea what discs contain certain episodes. I think this is going to be a project for me over the summer.

I use these cool dvd case things. I have a spreadsheet with all of the individual discs locations so I know where they are. It works well.

I am very weird about this kind of thing. My DVD collection is well past a thousand (I have no idea what the count is anymore) but I refuse to separate the disc from the original cases. They would fill up an entire room but I won't give in to save space. I guess it is my OCD or something. I also require the disc to be placed in the case after each use with the label properly lined up. You will never see discs strewn about the living room or in the wrong cases. I also keep the collection alphabetized and sorted into movies or television.

(Not only do I have a DVD addiction but this thing feeds the obsessive compulsive monkey on my back. It scares me sometimes!)

I have a big binder for discs myself, but I don't like using it because it feels wrong to not keep them in their original cases.

I'm in a similar frame of mind as Astrosmurf when it comes to my dvds:)

They're not quite in alphabetical order, but that's usually down to time and having to reorganize the space every time I get a new one. I think it's almost time to redo them again.

(They are also kept up to date on a database)

I have a 400 disc changer, so about 1/3rd of my DVD collection is active at any given time. I save them in their original cases just in case I ever need to sell them.

Eh, I'm with you AstroSmurf. Sure they aren't extremely sorted, but they always go back in the case and the cases are kept in good condition. Part of being a collector.

I gave up on keeping DVD's in their original cases last fall. I switched to binders and tossed the cases, but kept the actual covers. It's still a work in progress. I have five 250-disk binders and one 125-disk binder and I STILL have a bunch of stuff I need to transfer. I kinda miss the cases but the gravitational attraction was forming a small black hole.

Everything's in alphabetical order and movies and TV are separated.

My blu-rays and HD DVD's (less than 200 disks total so far) remain in the original cases.

Astrosmurf et al: Im with you guys. I could never separate the two.

I'm an excellent driver! K-mart sucks! 5 minutes 'til Wapner!

Yes (except for my Star Trek stuff, I keep all those in their cases). But other than that, everything goes in the Big Binder O' Movie Goodness. SO much easier.

I'm amazed so many people have ditched their dvd cases. That would never have occurred to me! I have shelves and shelves of dvds but I wouldn't get rid of the cases. I guess space isn't enough of an issue for me.

To be honest, I thought this thread was going to be about dvd cover art. I was going to launch into a diatribe on how lousy I've found the bsg dvd cover art. Guess that's another thread!

Here's the thing you have to understand about me -- I'm lazy. DVD covers -- opening them, closing them, putting them away, storing them, and dusting them -- is TOO MUCH WORK. With the movies in the binder, I have instant access to what I want -- movies -- without any unpleasant responsibilities attached.

Yeah, I could never do this.

One thing I would do if only I could be bothered is to rip/encode all of my DVDs to disk so that I wouldn't have to actually use the discs.

You guys have way too many DVDs.

Judging by the descriptions, it's amazing. I remember "back in the day" when there would be word about the occasional person who had a VHS collection that would rival a video store. I'm talking collections so large that more than one room of the house, or even the basement, was converted to house all of those tapes. These days, even with a DVD case, the DVDs take up less space, but even for someone with "over 1,000", that's a loss of a lot of real estate.

Since I abhor clutter and collecting items that take up space, I look forward to the day when On Demand Video is widely available. I will then be able to disband the under 200 DVDs I currently own.

Well, to be fair, a lot of it is multi-disc sets. Farscape for example is 26 discs all by itself. I probably have 600 discs just in TV series.

Individual titles I probably "only" have about 400.

For me it wasn't an issue of space so much as it was an issue of me moving too often (like every 6-12 months). I got so tired of packing and unpacking all of my DVDs, so I just decided to ditch the cases and put all the discs into one large binder.
