Given the treatment Warner Bros. has given the franchise, I doubt it. I'm surprised it is even being streamed online.

That's another thing I hear alot. Warner's treats B5 and related stuff badly. I heard that Bruce Boxlightner had a beef with them regarding Sheridan, I hear that JMS has problems with them about the show, but no matter where I look, I can't seem to find a definitive answer. What exactly is the problem? Is it like what Gene Roddenberry went through with both Desilu/Paramount and NBC over Star Trek, or is there something else?

All that studios have ever cared about is money. As Worf would say "They are without honour!". ;)

B5 had a much smaller fan base than Trek and the ratings were not as high as they wanted them to be. Sad but true!

If Bruce Boxleitner ever had issues with WB, I never heard about it. Nor JMS, though he sometimes grouses about the almost non-existant royalties. ETA: There was an issue where they edited JMS' commentary on the Crusade DVDs but WB finally agreed to pull it in future pressings.

The problem with WB is that they consistently 'test the waters' with B5 but never seem to do anything else. First they didn't think VHS tapes would sell. They did. Ditto DVD. They did. And so on. The "Lost Tales" is a classic example. WB wanted proof that there was a viable market for Direct-to-DVD movies so they only gave them a budget of slightly over twice what an episode cost 10 years ago with the understanding that future ones would be substantially better funded. Word was that they were extremely pleased with sales (despite a marked lack of promotion) but when it came time to talk about more, no increased budget was offered. That was when JMS drew a line in the sand and said "Big budget feature film or nothing."

There's an excellent interview with JMS on the Babylon Podcast which explains why things are the way they are with WB and B5.

Farscape. Honourable nod to Battlestar Galactica and maybe a little piqsqueak bow for the little show that couldn't; Firefly. Give Londo an ale while I'm in an agreeable mood, he makes a fun drunk.

From this list I would have to go with Blake's 7
An aside: I never got that show. Is it because it was the eighties, nothing else was on, and you're all nostalgic for it? Because the few episodes I saw (the first three) had me bored out of my skull and then my skull drowned itself. The Brits are masters of dreadfully dull skiffy fare, to be fair.

Can some of you folks tell me again, what you like about Star Trek ?
It is, at its best, the quinessential smart and entertaining space opera franchise.

nuBSG with Farscape a super close #2

I voted Babylon 5, but how could Doctor Who and Space Island One be left off the poll?
I don't know if I'd consider Doctor Who "Space Based"
WTF? The Tardis is a spaceship. Many of the stories take place aboard spaceships that are traveling in space. Forgive me for thinking, then, that Doctor Who is space-based! :cardie:

Voted Firefly

While I like Farscape and nuBSG, haven't finished either series, Firefly is my choice.

Funny how the OP included short lived shows like Firefly or Crusade but left off something like Earth Final Conflict or Alien Nation. I know by default those are the "specify" choices just found it curious.

To be fair, I wouldn't consider either EARTH: FINAL CONFLICT or ALIEN NATION space-based shows. They were mostly about alien presences on Earth.

I suspect the OP was thinking of shows set on starships and space stations and such.

I first saw the show in 2008, so I'm not nostalgic. While I can see how the first episodes could be seen as slow, overall it's just a hell of a ride.
I loved the characters, the witty dialogue and the fresh spin on old sci-fi clichés. It managed to grab my attention despite the horrible special effects and the sometimes audacious choices of the costume department. Its look is quite dated, but the story is not.

:wtf: Well, de gustibus non disputandum, I guess, but I totally disagree with this. Granted, I don't know half of them, but the ones I do know I love or at leat like a great deal.

It's the pacing though. By episode three they've just got to the spaceship; I found the characters dry and the plot uninvolving. Effects or no I probably couldn't hack a fourth episode. I understand the show inspired and/or is similar to Firefly and Farscape, but in the end I'd simply rather watch those again.

Even the ones I like (well, the one, that is Red Dwarf) I can tire of rather quickly. I can't put my finger on why.

Precisely! :)

Another show.

I liked Buck Rogers & there was a show I liked alot I don't think many people saw it... Starhunter.

I would've voted Babylon 5, but I was just re-watching my Space: Above and Beyond DVDs, and I wanted to make sure it got some love.

It would be nice if the original version of The Gathering were available.
I haven't checked it out myself but I understand that the version of "The Gathering" on at least some of the streaming sites is the original. Try Hulu or Netflix?

Jan

Here it is:
The Gathering (with score by Stewart Copeland).

I still prefer the reissued version from TNT, with score by Christopher Franke (who scored the rest of the series). However, it's nice to have the original to enjoy and compare.
Well, a large part of why I loved The Equalizer was Stewart Copeland's music, so that's a big reason why I stuck around for the series after The Gathering aired. I grew to love Christopher Franke's music, but I was really pissed when I bought The Gathering/In the Beginning DVD, and found it re-edited with Copeland's music replaced. I couldn't sit through more than the first 20 minutes.
