Which is the best series?

Well it depends on what you're looking for. If you want a lot of action and humor go with SG1. But keep in mind a lot of the acting is bad, and the FX are horribly dated, way worse than TNG's. And half of the planets they gate to are just the same forest again and again. The character's are very likeable. It is more of a fun show without getting too deep. Although there are a lot of changes, this show is most similar to the original Stargate movie so you might want to check that out 1st.

I can't give you any good reason to watch SGA. That show is wretchedly awful and unwatchable to me. Awful characters, awful acting...just awful. It has the same tone and quality of an average Sci-fi original movie. Nuff said.

SGU is darker, has amazing FX and they actually spent the $$$ to hire some good actors. People criticize it for soap opera elements and being kind of slow. Since there has only been one season, it is a good chance to jump onboard with it. And it doesn't require viewing the previous shows to understand what is going on, which is a big plus to someone like me who wasn't a fan of the older series. If you couldn't tell, I'm a huge fan of SGU and not so much the other shows..

So make of that what you will, but I'd go with SGU.

Hmm. I emphatically disagree, the effects are definitely better than SG-1 and the acting is too, in my humble opinion. Also, I really enjoy SGA, not quite as much as SG-1 but it's still one of my favorite shows.
I'm actually enjoying SGU now that I've come to stop expecting it to be like SG-1 or SGA in any way, shape, or form. It's dark, which I don't mind, but I'm really enjoying that it's mostly character-driven conflict as opposed to the System Lord or Evil Wraith Plot of the week. Which I also enjoyed...I guess it's just nice to watch something different.

Oh, and about the same forest thing...O'Neill actually mocks that in one episode, saying something like "Oh, look, trees! Trees, trees, and more trees. Never seen that before." One of the things I like most about SG-1 is that it doesn't take itself too seriously, while SGU tends to take itself a little more seriously than it should.

So in conclusion, SG-1 and SGA are both great in my opinion, but you should watch at least part of SG-1 before you watch SGA. Also, if you're only interested in the first two shows because of SGU, you will probably be disappointed because they are really polar opposites. And SG-1 Seasons 9 and 10 are also pretty different but they have their moments.

SG-1 is my favorite, and SGA is ok. I love Rodney, he is one of my top 10 tv characters of all time.

SGU is fine. I like the 2nd half of this season more than the first, but it's still too early to tell where the series fits in. I hate most of the pop music, and I can't stand the montages. The special effects are excellent and I like most of the characters.

Atlantis is good but didn't really commit to any of it's potential and therefore cannot match SG-1.

I've really enjoyed Universe so far for the entire season, but it's very different in tone to the other two series. I can understand why some Stargate fans might not like it. Definately worth checking out though.

You know something's wrong when your favorite part of an SG-U episode is the SG-1 character cameos.

That's not an unusual attitude. When are people not excited about seeing guests from the "mother" show? I'm sure people felt the same way when Nimoy appeared on TNG for example.

I always feel like SGU is sucking the energy out of the room. I doubt I'd keep watching it if my roommate didn't like it. Perhaps that's where they're getting the "new energy".....

SG-1 is a fantastic show, it became my favourite show for many years, pretty much from it's first run through to the 8th year, when the quality was beginning to slip. nuSG1 in seasons 9 and 10 was entertaining enough but never really gripped me.
Seasons 2 and 3 of SG-1 in particular are brilliant. It's been alluded to already, but the standard disclaimer: the second episode, Emancipation, is one of the worst things ever committed to celluloid. Please, please don't prejudice what follows on that.

That's hardly a comparison. Nimoy didn't appear on TNG until its fifth season. and prior to thatm the only other actor from the TOS cast to appear in TNG was DeForrest Kelley in Farpoint.

Now look at SGU. In its firs 19 episodes, we've had 6 with O'Neill, 4 with Daniel, and 2 with Carter. And to make matters worse, its purely stunt casting when other characters could have done. Honestly, they could have any fill in as a general for Young to report to. It would have made a hell of a lot more sense for anyone else to be watching Rush. Seriously, can't the Pentagon find someone other than an archeologist to conduct covert surveillance? And and starship commander could have been used in Air and Incursion. If you're going to use established characters, do something substantial with them. As it is, you could replace the SG-1 characters in SGU with any other character, give them the same dialogue and it wouldn't change anything.

Yeah, I get that vibe a lot. It's not so bad in Time, the one where Rush mentally tortures himself, Lost, Subversion, and Incursion, but the rest of the show is just so pointless that I can watch the show on my computer while browsing the Internet without fear of missing much. They really need to replace a lot of the writing staff and get some people who have good ideas for stories instead of DRAMA that adds nothing to the characters, spreading stuff that could be handled in one or two episodes over half a season, and not actually using the elements they have.

Im sorry but thats complete nonscense the SFX has always been good especially in the later seasons.

I meant that it's not unusual to get excited over a guest crossing over from another show. It doesn't mean there's something deficient about whatever current show the guest is appearing on. Getting excited over a returning SG-1 character doesn't mean there's something lacking from SGU.

As for the rest of your post, I agree that Daniel running around with a camera was a bit odd, but on the whole, I don't see any problem with their inclusion in the show or the way they're used. I see their cameos as nice little touches. It's just nice to see them pop up from time to time. I like that the show is blending them in seamlessly as a normal part of the drama as opposed to putting them front and center as once-in-a-blue-moon featured guests.

I'm a casual Stargate fan and I don't really have a favorite series. So I agree with the poster that said its really about what you're looking for.

I thought SG-1 and SGA were good sci-fi action shows. SG-1 has the lightest tone, but the main cast is fairly likable and well developed characters. I thought the FX for SG-1 were pretty good, particularly in the later seasons. I enjoyed SGA, it started out a little darker, but then pretty much took on the tone of SG-1. I think SG-1 had better adversaries though. There was an overemphasis on the Wraith in SGA.

But to me, SGU is a different animal. It has a different tone and characters that wouldn't easily fit within the framework established by the other two shows. There are more gray areas with the SGU characters, and there is more focus on 'gritty realism'. I enjoy SGU for what it is. It's not a romp like SG-1 and to some extent SGA was, I gather that SGU is supposed to be more introspective. Maybe its supposed to be the 'adult' SG franchise.

The pacing for SGU is a little slow, and though you can drop in and watch it without watching the previous shows, I think that it takes something away from your enjoyment. With SG-1 or SGA I could just watch them. Many of those episodes seemed more self-contained than SGU's episodes IMO.

Stargate SG1 by leaps and bounds. They had the best characters and the best episodes by far. Stargate Atlantis was decent in its early seasons but by the fifth season, that show was ready for cancellation. Stargate Universe is just a complete mess. Its characters are just pathetic compared to their predecessors and the episodes are slow and plodding. I'd rather have a sixth season of Atlantis than another season of Universe.

I'd have to say SG-1 was by far the best series. It had the best characters, the best stories, and the more interesting villains.

SG:A started off OK, but took a steep nose-dive in the quality of the stories.

SG:U, I think, is starting off better than SGA, but it may be too early to tell.

Universe's problem is that the writing sucks. There's so much potential for character development that gets pushed aside for stone assisted drama and pointless bickering, plus the writers always play safe with the characters, like having Eli, Chloe, and Scott get back to the ship in Sabotage, despite the fact that the Destiny should've been out of gate range.
