Which Is the Best Captain?

Always has been and always will be Kirk.

The rest of you, however, are entitled to be wrong.

They were all very good at times... it's a hard call, because they commanded a crew in scenarios unique to each.

Sisko is more personable, yes... but he was commanding a space station, which has different tactics than a starship. He is a bit more emotionally driven than the others.

I didn't care for Janeway...

Picard would be the logical choice. Very seasoned. A true diplomat. Highly intelligent and knows how to leverage his crew. But... there's something about him that's a bit too rigid. Although he has broken some rules, he generally doesn't to a fault even when you could see good cause.

Kirk is my choice. He is a bit of a playboy at times, un-befitting of a captain. But he makes up for it with his guile. Smart and good at trusting his instincts. Sharp tactical sense. Very good at motivating his crew. And lots of wisdom on tap. Legendary.

Robau.
Even with 5 minutes of screen time, still.

What gives you the RIGHT to decide who the best captain is, based on five minutes of screen time? :)

Although bringing that movie into the picture raises an interesting point: George Kirk (nu-style) succeeded where his prime universe son failed, in saving the lives of his wife and unborn child.

I guess it depends on what needs to be done.

For diplomacy and negotiation I would go with Picard
If it's general combat and tactics, I'd go Sisko
Kirk was great when the odds were against you and you needed quick thinking.
Archer would be fantastic if you had a question about waterpolo.
Janeway... I got nothing.

Starfleet Citation for Conspicuous Gallantry
Starfleet Medal of Honor
Starfleet Silver Palm

Got to be doing something ok, If you need a good office manager then sure go with Picard, but for leadership out in the final frontier I have to go with Kirk.

^ I am not sure what you are getting at but I am not closing the thread. If they would like to discuss this topic again I don't see a problem with it.
I'm just joking. I think maybe by now we need a "Which Captain/Series is your favorite?" sticky.
That is actually a good idea, albeit tongue-in-cheek.:rommie:

This. My vote is for Kirk.:techman:

Sisko would make a great Captain and leader, but he seems to be a little emotionally unstable. I think for one: his wife died during the Borg invasion and two I think he is somehow connected to the wormhole aliens. We see on "Tears of The Prophets" what happened when the wormhole aliens couldn't reach him. He was instantly unable to command the ship and Major Kira had to take over.

No further words needed.

Hope you don't mind me butting in and reviving this thread; I couldn't stand the idea of creating yet another one. ;) May the discussion continue!

While Captain Data [even if just acting captain] will always be my favorite of all the captains, of the main captains, I'd say that Picard and Janeway are at a very close tie for me. Only Picard can face god-like creatures every other week and still be skeptical when a new alien claims that kind of power. Only Janeway can get lost on the other side of the galaxy and stay somewhat sane with a crew like that.

I have to go with Kirk. He's the legend. I also really liked Sisko, and I respected Picard. The others weren't bad, but couldn't measure up to the others, though in Archer's case, he suffered from the growing pains of being the first Captain out there doing that, and I think he did a great job as the captain of the first Warp 5 ship.

I was ready to come into a thread with a title like this screaming murder but saw that it's an old thread that it seems like PianoWizzy simply reivied.
That's fine then. Not that it's really for me to judge but I'm happy just so long as it's not a new thread about it.

I'll state mine again. Pikirksko.

Lets try something different, ok not my personal opinion...but this is going to be controversial, technically the Best Captain is "Captain Janeway"... WHAT?!! let me explain

*She ends up 75,000 lightyears away in a small ship, with a small crew, no contact with Starfleet and no Federation to back her up

*She negotiates, outwits and if necessary defeats a wide range of Powerful and Hostile Aliens

*Finds a way to defeat an almost "Invincible" Alien Species (Species 8472) from another dimension that were absolutely caning the Borg

*She survives almost monthly encounters with the Borg, while being deep in the heart of their territory, She outwits them, finds ways to defeat them and most of the time this has been done in sniffing range and none of Voyagers crew have been Assimilated

*She gets Voyager home within 7 years, with minimal casualties, damage amd a ton of new and exciting technology

Facts speak for themselves...

Well, she's certainly the strongest leader of every captain to have ever served for Starfleet, I'll totally give her that. :D

This might be a cop out answer but I can't choose between Kirk and Picard. Two very different styles but two very effective and strong captains.
