It's kind of an unfair comparison, since one has the legal freedom to do whatever it wants with "Star Trek" trademarked material, while the other has to dance around copyright issues. I love both, but "Lower Decks" is able to do so much more.

Surely Orville has freedom to do whatever it wants with fewer limits, since nobody higher up would say "Star Trek characters would never so-and-so"?

Sometimes I'll watch Orville, and think "They would do this different on Trek." Like one of the early episodes where Ed and Kelly are trapped in that alien zoo. So Alara negotiates to get them out in exchange for their library of reality programming. The thought that occured to me is, "If this was Trek, Kirk would have this place shut down and everyone gets freed."

It did happen on Trek though. "The Cage". And nobody but Pike was freed!

I have to go with Lower Decks. The portrayal of Ed's behavior towards Kelly in The Orville while she was dating another guy was really misogynistic; he literally stalked her, and the show treated that like a normal, understandable thing.

The Orville but I came to really love Lower Decks this season. Still this question should have been asked in General Trek were you can compare the 2 Trek shows or the Sci Fi forum. Asking it in this forum is kind of like going to Fenway Park and asking people if they like Big Papi better than Derek Jeter. One clearly has the home field advantage in such a question.

I think Lower Decks does it better because it gets to be Trek, gets to play with the toys. While Orville does have more creative freedom as it was, the more it uses that freedom the more it moves away from being a Trek homage and it's own thing. There's nothing wrong with that, but I think it's like the appeal of say writing Trek literature or Trek fan fiction as opposed to doing original work. You're getting to put your mark on beloved characters that you perhaps grew up looking at versus potential offshoots or variations of them.

And Lower Decks gets to be official and tied to a fifty-plus year franchise. Who knows how long Orville will go or what kind of legacy it will have.

I prefer the Orville.

That being said, Lower Decks is easily my favorite of all the newer Trek shows. Discovery focuses too much on one character, Picard started strong but stumbled hard as it went on, and while Prodigy is good it really isn't aimed at me. Lower Decks injects enough TNG through ENT style of the trek formular with some humor, I rather like it.

The Orville though gives me more of that TNG feel than even Lower Decks does, and you can really tell how its creators are huge sci fi and Trek fans. I know it has had a few moments people didn't like, but lets not forget all of Trek has those same moments. I don't hate TNG just because Code of Honor is a thing. So I won't let a moment of bad taste negate all the good taste.

Voted for Lower decks, because its more fun to me "in a packed version".
Too bad its just 10 episodes per season.

Definatly also love The Orville too. I watch both on streaming service and buy DVDs once available.

I love both for the lightness and the humor. I am mean come on Disocvery and Picard shows that are so dark. And saving the whole universe in every 2nd episode.. nah. BTW In these times fun is more important then dark dark drama.

I really like both, but I think Orville is a little too crude from time to time. And the multi-year hiatus as it switched from Fox to Hulu hurt the show, IMO.

Lower Decks, by a lot.

Orville is a good show too. But it never could decide whether it was a Bermantrek clone or a comedy and ended up being so-so at both, with a lot of the humor just being immature.
