I think B'Elanna had too much self-pity. OK, her dad left when she was young. But the idea of her feeling bad for being angry (due to her Klingon nature) was a bit tiresome. She was born half-Klingon, get over it already.
Worf had it harder here, he was full Klingon, and had to temper his Klingon nature to live in human/Federation society. This whilst still in his heart living by Klingon beliefs/values (which B'Elanna never did).
Tom Paris is another dud. He never seemed to take anything seriously and everything was a huge joke. He doesn't even seem to be an intelligent person, which must be a prerequisite to be a Starfleet officer. In raw intellect alone, he seemed like a baby compared to Janeway, Chakotay, Kim, B'Elanna, Tuvok, the Doctor and even Neelix. Neelix had little experience of ship operations, but had a lot of life experience to fall back on.
