She has been fighting cancer over the last year or so.
She had some kind of surgery back in late Nov early Dec.

The older we get the harder it is to get over surgery and it's takes longer to heal.

Recent posts on her Twitter account seem to indicate that she is recovering nicely though.

Thank you for the information. That makes sense. I’m usually not one to speculate based on appearance, but it seemed apparent enough to me that something was wrong that I thought I’d ask.

Hopefully she continues getting well.

The only thing I can think, beyond an explanation that Dr Crusher is no-more, is that Picard brought in his CMO from the Stargazer as there would be less of an emotional barrier and more impartial.

Picard clearly understands that his former crew will do almost anything for him out of personal loyalty, which he doesn't really want.

Doesn't look too good for the Doc...
Probably the producers are keeping her character up in the air until they have an idea. Just recently Patrick Stewart opened an invitation for Guinan's return to Whoopi Goldberg on The View for season 2, maybe Beverly may have an appearance.

I've heard on the forum about Gates McFadden supposedly having cancer several times, but I can find no real information on this outside of the forum. She did survive a bout with breast cancer a few years back. But on January 20th she said she was "grateful to be healthy and happy" on twitter.

I wasn't too worried about the fact that Beverly wasn't mentioned along with Worf, Riker and Geordi. Troi wasn't mentioned either, and we know that she's still around. It would have seemed more forced if Zhaben had just stood there and listed every main cast member from TNG.

As for how Gates is looking these days, I met her at a convention back in August and I thought she looked great! We posed for a cute pic with both of us sipping swirly straws out of one of those coffee mugs shaped like her head that they made back in the '90s (she said it was the ugliest piece of memorabilia she remembers them releasing, lol).

I just wanted to pipe in and say that Gates McFadden has not confirmed or stated that she is currently battling cancer. She is, indeed, a breast cancer survivor (which she confirmed on twitter a number of years back), but the surgery she underwent was collar bone reattachment due to a shoulder injury. She did tweet a picture of tennis shoes that have FU Cancer written on the heels which is probably why the rumor started, but it has not be confirmed by McFadden herself.

Now, my theory about Dr. Crusher appearing on Picard. First, the character is not dead. Given that Geordi appears to have survived the attack on Mars, I don't think the producers want to kill off any former TNG characters off screen. My hunch is that all the old Enterprise crew (maybe with the exception of Worf) have retired from service. Beverly might be living on the colony where her grandmother died (you know, the space ghost episode).

Second, for some reason, I feel like Beverly will be the last of the TNG regulars to appear on Picard. I don't know why, I just feel that. It's possible that between the end of Nemesis and prior to the Mars attack, she and Picard got together (not necessarily married). After Picard left the service, the tension pushed them apart.

Riker would be 64 as of Picard, and could have taken early retirement. 20 years of command is long enough, longer than Archer commanded the NX-01, longer than Janeway commanded Voyager, and longer than Pike commanded the Enterprise. Kirk's command dates are unclear after TPM.
64 is nothing in that era. Picard was captain to his late 70’s.
I will be really bummed if he’s retired.

Good for him!

They could get him and the Traveller back together for ol' times sake.

<gasping> All right, who's Force choking me? <gasp>

Won't happen. Eric Menyuk (The Traveler) retired from acting to become a lawyer.

I did get a kick out of people theorizing that David Paymer (Dr. Benayoun) was the Traveler in the trailers.

Maybe it has nothing to do with age but if Riker and Troi have kids, they may realize a starship isn't the best place to raise one.

It still would have been nice to have a doctor we met treating Picard. Maybe Crusher has too much baggage though, and Picard didn't like Pulaski. Dr. Selar?

Selar would have no emotional connection to Picard (no pun intended), nor to the audience. Yes, it would be an "easter egg" but that's it. I loved the fact that we got an old Stargazer friend. Picard had a life before and after the Enterprise and that's what this series is showing us.

Those years on the Enterprise(s) aren't the only ones that mattered to him and the only place he made friends. Raffi is a post-Enterprise friend and Dr. Paymer is a pre-Enterprise friend. It makes Picard feel more real, his life more lived-in.

That's much more interesting than revisiting a minor, one-and-done character.

From the trailers, it sure looks like Riker is retired. Which, I agree, is a bummer. I was honestly hoping they'd go the "last man standing" AGT route, where Riker was (practically) the only still remaining in Starfleet. That felt much more appropriate for his character than "scruffy old dude in overalls."

Jellico obviously went very high up in the chain of Starfleet Command and got his revenge on Riker somehow.

Thanks for the clarification. I did see her tennis shoes tweet so I was a bit concerned about her health. Glad to hear she seems to be all OK

My theory is that Beverly and Picard has not been seen each other much since the time of 'Nemesis.'

In "Insurrection's" opening Beverly was quite affectionate with Picard, fixing his uniform, joking around, etc, which seemed to indicate the two were getting closer, perhaps on a more intimatel level. Picard then decided to have a fling with Anij in the Ba'ku planet (while Beverly was on a different mission on the planet) and in the later scene from the movie Beverly clearly wasn't amused with this development.

At the end of 'Nemesis,' Beverly left the Enterprise to assume a new position at Starfleet Medical. Yes in the deleted scenes there were an extended dialogue between the two which indicate they were still affectionate towards each other, but since it was cut from the main movie it can be treated as a non-canon. I have a hunch she and Picard have few contact with each other since then.

I do hope we'll see the two reunited, albeit only for a brief time, next season. Beverly was one of Picard's closest friend and the two had gotten to know each other for more than five decades by 2397, since she was a young cadet dating Jack Crusher on the Stargazer in the 2340s. It would be odd if the show-runners never touches upon their relationship and treats them as never existed ;);).

Beverly finally admitted to Jean-Luc that the "something she's been meaning to tell him" was that their brief affair while she was married to Jack produced Wesley. Feeling so much guilt as well as anger at the 30+ year lie, Picard could no longer feel comfortable being around her and they parted ways. Crusher later developed a bad cordrazine addiction and ODed two years later behind a Ferengi bar while in the company of a Nausicaan escort.

I feel they're deliberately putting off mentioning Beverly. She's such a big part of Picard's life that she merits more than a throwaway line. I'm guessing the writers will still be deciding where things go for season two, so right now it's better to avoid the Crusher topic completely.
