A lot of my friends, family and co-workers were huge Voyager fans. DS9 not so much: that was the show on at odd hours where I live and kind of an afterthought. Of course I personally love it now, but that's another thing.

Anyway, most assumed Voyager would be the next to transition to movies (around the time of Insurrection not recreating the success of First Contact), with the first one getting them home. In retrospect, their story was done with Endgame and DS9's with WYLB.

Enterprise? That show could barely stay on the air first run. Never thought a feature film was a possibility.

FWIW, Brent Spiner has said the original plan for STXI was to bring back Data and do a Justice League of Trek, bringing all the crews together to fight a group of baddies.

When that was cancelled, they nearly did a Romulan War film, but one where the Enterprise was stuck at Risa and missed the entire week-long conflict. The war was won single-handedly by Kirk's granddad on a stolen ship armed with a(n also stolen, but from different people) nuke. Shran and Captain Hernandez would have had cameos.

Thank you, JJ Abrams, for rescuing us from these movies.

Back in the day, I was hoping the final TNG movie would be about getting the Voyager crew home.

I guess I hadn't thought that one through. On any level.

I would disagree with that. DS9 and Voyager's series finales were left open ended. Perhaps not to the degree that "All Good Things..." was but you did get some sense that either one of those shows could continue. If anything "Enterprise" is the show that you really got a sense of "Okay, this is a done deal."

How in any way were the DS9 and VOY finales "open-ended?" In DS9, they ended the Dominion War and BROKE UP THE MAIN CHARACTERS! In Voyager, the main premise was the crew trying to get home, and in the finale they accomplished their goal.

Open-ended doesn't mean "none of the main characters of a show are actually dead," it just means that the main storylines are concluded and character fates are usually revealed or at least given direction. Both finales did that.

With Voyager, having just seen the finale again, Kim proposes a toast to "The journey, NOT the destination." I think that's why we didn't see any post-arrival at earth stuff. Roll credits. My wife said, "Smart, leave them wanting more." Something to be said for that and the series WAS about the journey, NOT the destination. Finished.

DS9: finished, all ends tied up.

I somehow think Stewart and Spiner would not have been all that willing to share the spotlight with the other crews. They were given a huge say in the movies, which I think to an extent derailed and eventually killed TNG as a film franchise. The series was never "The Picard and Data Show," but that's what the movies gave us. One could argue a two hour movie only has so much time and so many characters to focus on, but with TSFS forward, TOS films managed to give both "the big three" and "the little four" plenty of nice moments.

Honestly, no. I never thought any of the characters (other than maybe the Doctor from VOY and MAYBE Sisko from DS9) had any particular screen presence/acting chops, when all was said and done.

Definitely not Archer or any of the characters from ENT, unfortunately.

Just IMO, of course.

Deep Space Nine went through significant crew changes true, but as the relaunch novels have proven the story can continue. Voyager's main story arc of coming home was concluded but that doesn't mean you couldn't do a movie with maybe Chakotay in command of the ship. Etc.

Even though I knew it wasn't terribly popular outside fan circles. And even then it was dogged on a lot. But I always thought a cool Voyager movie could involve Species 8472.

My idea would involve a massive invasion heading towards Earth and since Starfleet knows Janeway dealt with them first hand they'd ask her to reassemble her crew and lead a defense with Voyager.

I never bought into the whole idea that a film version of either Voyager of Deep Space Nine wouldn't do that well because the casts were unknown to mainstream movie goers for the simple fact that millions of movies come out where the cast and/or stories are unknown up to the point where the person sees the movie.

A good story coupled with a good marketing team can make any movie look appealing.

Well right, I mean you can always tack-on further adventures through books, etc. or go into other premises entirely. Like I said, the main characters were all still around in-universe. But the major storylines of the shows were wrapped up, in contrast with TNG, whose finale was basically just a bigger "event" episode that didn't end their mission, reveal fates of characters, etc.

In 1994 I hoped it was possible. After all, DS9 was in its infancy, and I could hope that the ratings would eventually climb high enough. Voyager had been announced but not yet premiered, so for all I knew it was going to be as good and popular as TNG.

In the years that followed it quickly became obvious that those shows were going to stay on the small screen, but in 1994 anything seemed possible.

For whatever reason, Voyager had a much higher public profile than DS9 (though DS9's ratings were just a little bit better than Voyager's). It may have been as simple as Voyager being on a weblet which ran shows day-and-time, as you say. The best-known post-TNG character in Star Trek as far as the general public is concerned is Seven of Nine.

I had hoped so, just as my father and I had long discussions about how Series V should tie in DS9 and Voyager together (or possibly be a Relativity series). I thought a combination movie (long-rumored) would have been epic, as well.

Nope. None of the other shows quite had the same mass appeal as TNG did so them getting a theatrical release would've been highly unlikely. A DTV or TV Movie may have been possible but never a theatrical release.

Right after Nemesis, I had hopes of a spin off film series featuring Riker on the USS Titan, with a mixed cast made of actors from TNG, DS9, and VOY making appearances. I wasn't sure who would have been in the films exactly,though. As I saw it, I thought that Stewart, Brooks, Mcfadden, Spiner, Auberjonois probably wouldn't have wanted to return, but I thought the majority of the VOY cast, and much of the DS9 cast would return, at least for cameos, along with some of the TNG actors Like Frakes, Sirtis, Shultz, and maybe Burton. I wouldn't have minded seeing Q, too. I would like to say the Titan novels might have resembled this, but I had no clue what the plot would have been for such a movie.

My memory is a bit hazy on this, when exactly was TNG announced to make the jump to features?

I'm pretty certain it was before TNG wrapped up it's television run, yet I don't recall watching the series finale knowing they'd end up in movies. Or maybe I'm just getting old

It was 1994. Right after the series ended, pretty much. I was surprised a movie was announced so quickly, but then again they already had the sets and everything so that's probably why it was announced so quickly.
