When TNG jumped to features did you think the others shows would too?

Re: When TNG jumped to features did you think the others shows would t

Ugh... a Titan movie... how unwatchable would that have been?

Re: When TNG jumped to features did you think the others shows would t

Right after Nemesis, I had hopes of a spin off film series featuring Riker on the USS Titan, with a mixed cast made of actors from TNG, DS9, and VOY making appearances. I wasn't sure who would have been in the films exactly, though. As I saw it, I thought that Stewart, Brooks, Mcfadden, Spiner, Auberjonois probably wouldn't have wanted to return, but I thought the majority of the VOY cast, and much of the DS9 cast would return, at least for cameos, along with some of the TNG actors Like Frakes, Sirtis, Shultz, and maybe Burton. I wouldn't have minded seeing Q, too. I would like to say the Titan novels might have resembled this, but I had no clue what the plot would have been for such a movie.

Two words: After M*A*S*H

Titan movie..."Shudders"

Nemesis was practically the death of Trek..the creative minds simply weren't creative anymore..and it showed...

Had it been a better film, maybe the scenario of DS9 or Voy movies would have been practical..but as Nemesis sucked badly both critically and at the box office..it wasn't going to happen...

Re: When TNG jumped to features did you think the others shows would t

no way, a Titan movie would have been AWESOME.

Re: When TNG jumped to features did you think the others shows would t

Deep Space Nine went through significant crew changes true, but as the relaunch novels have proven the story can continue. Voyager's main story arc of coming home was concluded but that doesn't mean you couldn't do a movie with maybe Chakotay in command of the ship. Etc.

Producing material that is suitable for the ten thousand or so people who care enough to buy franchise fiction is a world away from producing something that you are going to spend millions of dollars on and has to appeal to a mainstream audience.

Chakotay could be having sex with a goat on the bridge and I think the result would be indifference from the movie going public.

The same with Riker and the Titan, not that Troi is a goat.

Re: When TNG jumped to features did you think the others shows would t

Never when I was a kid or any time between now and then have I ever thought anything that didn't feature the Enterprise/Enterprise cast would be made into a feature film. The Enterprise and it's cast are the "flagship" of the franchise and what the general public recognizes most.

I think it's only proper and seriously doubt that pattern will ever change.

Re: When TNG jumped to features did you think the others shows would t

Ok now that marvel is preping us for the Avengers movies with these origin stories of the heroes, why couldnt Paramount use the TNG films to introduce us to Sisko & Janeway? They already sort of did with Nemesis. Imagine ending Nemesis with the Enterprise docked at DS9, making the transition from Enterprise to The Titan. The movie ends with both ships warping out from DS9, credits roll over the station.

No exec in Hollywood in their right mind would have Frakes or Sirtis in leading roles in a movie, nor would they make a movie about Titan. Voyager and DS9 had mediocre to terrible ratings through their runs on television so why would they even TRY to make them work as a movie?

To be fair... so did Star Trek. :p

Stop right there, because that's an oxymoron. No such animal exists.

And, personally, I think that doing Trek as feature films has always been a bad idea. Yup, always. TOS, TNG, and Abrams all included. The Trek format is at its best on television as a continuing series. It's too limited in the movie environment, having to come up with a two hour "event" to attract that fabled "mass audience."

No, I'd rather have seen Phase II, an eighth season of TNG and, well, Abrams nowhere near Star Trek ever.

er, right, but they didn't make TMP in 1970, they made it a decade after the series ended, when it had become hugely popular in reruns, through conventions, etc.

If DS9 or VOY was getting huge ratings in re-runs, while DVD sales for the shows were going through the roof ten years after the series had ended, it'd be a different story.

Re: When TNG jumped to features did you think the others shows would t

No, I never did.

Once Voyager gets home, and the crew disembarks, what's the ongoing premise of Voyager? A reunion show where everyone brings each other up-to-date about what they've been up to? Endgame milked all there was in that, IMO. Getting stranded back on the island?

By the end of DS9, all its story arcs were played out too, IMO. Would people have flocked to see DS9: The Search for Sisko?

I think a more reasonable question is to wonder whether a DS9 TV movie or direct to DVD movie should have been attempted.

Re: When TNG jumped to features did you think the others shows would t

I think the question isn't "did you think Voyage and DS9 would go to movies after you saw the endings?" It's probably more like "once TNG went to films, did you think at the time that DS9 would eventually get there? And when Voyager started, did you assume it might also be a movie franchise?" All before we saw the ending episodes.

I do remember thinking that DS9 was too restricted in format to make a decent movie. However, I also remember thinking "I can't imagine they'd not wrap up Voyager just to make movies. What if it bombs?" But once it was coming toward the end, it was pretty clear TNG was the movie franchise and the other two shows wouldn't take over. If only because TNG had a main stream popularity that the other shows never attained.

I read a Starlog interview which said TNG would end in "two more years" and then "the cast will probably go to the big screen." I remember thinking that I'd rather they just keep the show going because you can have a few crappy episodes and still keep your audience. One your movie tanks, though, the party's over. Also, I was unconvinced TNG would be as successful. There was no time to build up a hunger. TOS had 10 years; TNG had six months. I didn't miss them and I was actually MORE excited about seeing the original crew again.

I am not sure where DS9 or Voyager would have gone after their finales in the Theater, adn I doubt it was ever possible. We are talking about a movie after 7 seasons of Next Gen, 7 seasons of DS9, and 7 seasons of Voy, and 9 films, the beginning of Enterprise, by the time VOY ended. Reboot aside, too much time has passed now to even hope for a TV movie for either\both\mixed cast, etc, too. Now, I would have watched such a TV movie, but I think it would have been about as successful as the post series Babylon 5 movies.

Actually that is what I meant. Since this thread has been going pretty steady regardless, I never bothered to correct it, but yes. As stated, I was asking if you thought the other shows would eventually get movies once it was known TNG crew was getting a movie. I believe DS9 was at the time in it's 3rd season when Generations was announced, and Voyager was just starting up. At the time there was no way to know (or that I knew) DS9 would only get a niche audience and that Voyager would end up being regarded by fans (note, not all fans) the way it is now.
