When those Chiliean miners are rescued...

I'd say actually doing it would be in bad taste and rather insensitive, but to be offended by suggesting that it would be funny if they did do it is a bit overboard, IMO.

Think about it for a second... they come up one by one and the first thing they see is a dude in a Dr Zaius mask welcoming them back to their new planet. It's a pretty funny thought, especially considering the high likelihood that they're all going to be perfectly OK. It's not a dead baby joke on the day of the OKC bombing.

It's probably very uncomfortable down there and I'm sure they all miss their families tremendously, but they've had food and water and companionship and they aren't swimming in their own shit, and they've had plenty of time to adjust to their circumstance and plenty of good news and hope for rescue for many weeks now. From what I've read it does not appear they were under constant pressure of the threat of death for months. I'd imagine seeing their families and a good, long, hot shower are just about all these men will be concerned with immediately after they reach the surface.

Not to mentiion we don't know if they are familiar with Planet of Apes...

They are in nowhere near the danger that the Beaconsfield miners were in and the Beaconsfield miners joked with their rescuers for days before they were rescued, and rescuers and miners and most Tasmanians were quite confident that the two men would be rescued once it was discovered that they were still alive.

The key words there are that the "miners joked with their rescuers." If the miners initiate the humor, great, go w/ it! For some people, including myself, it's a coping mechanism. But someone else initiating the humor is a whole different story.

^Yeah. They might not get the joke. They might react like the nurses at a Hollywood hospital whenever a trek actor in alien makeup needed medical attention.

I have to say there's an awful lot of pomposity in this thread, considering this is a tremendous human story. I imagine they'll be well up for a laugh when they get out. As to saying "oh there could still be fatalities - how dare you introduce levity" I say pfffft! I could get killed the minute I walk out of my office. So could anyone.

I live in a former mining area, and some of them probably would not get upset over a joke has a lot of miners have what some people would consider a dark sense of humour.

...should we get the crew on the surface to dress up like the cast of Planet of the Apes?

It's been two months... would be a funny joke... maybe for a little bit....

Guess you don't know any coal miners.

I do... half my family were coal miners in West Virginia and you do NOT want to mess with them when they come up out of the black....

I guess he's never been in a seriously life-threatening situation himself, either. I have, quite recently. God help anyone who would've been stupid (okay, insensitive) enough to joke about it before I did.

Once I started, the subject was fair game, and my friends and I -- and even the detective involved -- did a good bit of laughing together.

I bet your family members use dark humor, too -- amongst themselves, and when they choose to.

I lol'ed. There are a lot of oversensitive reactions here. It's a joke. And a moderately funny one too.

QFT. It's a joke, not a serious suggestion. Actually doing it would be too much; this is just a funny thought. No need to take anyone's head off, here.

Some of us have reasons for being "oversensitive." You of all people should understand that. Sorry, I guess I should leave this thread; it's obviously triggering my PTSD.

There may be reasons, but that shouldn't stop anyone from cracking a joke, no matter how bad or inappropriate it is.

If we stopped at every sensibility a person might possibly have, there would be no entertainment at all. There's always someone disgusted by the thought of people getting killed, so there would be no action movies, for example. Especially not those with funny one liners after the kill in them.

Reason or not, you can't expect to not read jokes like the OP's on a message board, nor can you expect not to read comments like mine in reply to the overblown castigation of the OP, who is clearly just joking and not meaning any offence. This is a message board, not therapy with a facilitator, and a certain degree of rough and tumble comes with the territory.

"Let off some steam", Jarod... ;)

Well, I was thinking about the situation in abstract, could be miners from any place trapped underground for weeks or months. Replace them with little green men masks if you want.
