I pretty much agree with you. Harry is largely a mediocre wizard. A good flier but pretty ordinary when it comes to charms and potions. He is good at making friends and maintaining loyalties. A natural networker. I wish I had Harry's networking skills.
That said I think he does deserves credit when it comes to his dueling skills. He's smart. Not Hermione smart but certainly smart on his feet. He was good enough as a fifth year student to get his peers up to at least a proficient skill level in DADA to survive battles against fully trained Death Eaters. He's a talented fighter and a great teacher.
He never was and never will be a Dumbledore or even a Hermione Granger. But hey he's just as famous as the former and the latter will likely more famous as his friend than on her own accomplishments.
Actually that's too bad though since Hermione does go on to help reform the ministry.
