What's with the new Harry Potter movie ads??

All they have been showing is lame teen, soap opera 'shipping. I'm sure Half Blood Prince isn't about just that. Has the success of Twilight got the studio shaking in their boots that much? Why would JKR sign off on it? A drippy soap opera Harry Potter isn't.

I wonder if they aren't trying to horn in on a little Twilight action there. Those ads did seem a bit odd after what we've come to expect so far.

Half-blood Prince is the book in the series with the least amount of actual substance. From what I've heard they've actually cut out a good deal of that substance, leaving the teenage soap opera stuff. Unfortunately, that did constitute a whole lot of the book.

Unfortunately, the novel actually was about 75% teen soap opera garbage, which is why I'm not terribly excited about the movie. The last two movies are going to be ****king incredible though :D

I looked at one trailer and it looked really good, maybe you saw a different one? There was a few angsty relationship things mentioned, but they weren't the focus of the trailer (some black things swirling around destroying a bridge was, which I don't remember from the book).

There was definitely angst and relationship stuff in the book, though, so I can't complain if it's in the movie. The Harry/Ginny storyline takes a big step forward here.

These are the TV ads. I haven't gone that far in the series yet. So should I pass on Half Blood Prince?

Well, if you're not up to date on the series, then you're going to have a hell of a time following it. But, even if it has the least substance there are some hella important events within this one.

The entire middle third (if not more) of the book was teen relationship angst. Blech.

I was 18 when this book was released (and Harry was what? 16 or 17?). So the teen angst stuff had some appeal to me. It's always been a part of the books ever since Harry had a crush on Cho, so to complain about it in this book seems to forget it follows the story of a bunch of teenagers who are witches and wizards. Plus, there's plenty of important information and set up for the last book (as well as information on Lord Voldemort's past). I can't really complain about the book. It was engrossing enough to keep me from getting car sick as I read it in one long drive.

The teen angst is pretty heavy as I remember in Half Blood Prince and was really started in the Order of Phoenix with Harry all gun ho about Cho then realizing that Ginny has a crush on him or whatever. Indeed the soap opera stuff is off setted nicely I think by the serious dark happenings in the novel. I wonder how this will translate onto the screen. As for Warner Bros wanting to infuse Twilight like romance into their proprety that shouldn't matter since Harry Potter is an already establishd franchise with it's own large audience. They shouldn't have to adjust or adapt anything to change with the times.

(some black things swirling around destroying a bridge was, which I don't remember from the book)

you wouldn't. they added it. THEY RAPED MY TWENTIES!

that jsut doesn't work, does it..?

Well the destruction of the bridge was mentioned in the first chapter of the novel and is certainly a more interesting way of opening the movie than a bunch of shitty exposition between the Prime Minister and Fudge.

BTW I just bought the HBP video game today. It's the PS2 version because I'm a cheapskate and it's a glitchy fucker but fun. I got to a scene that they created for the movie. Don't know if it's a spoiler since it ain't in the book but I guess this is a spoiler warning.

Harry goes to the Burrough for Christmas. It's nighttime and Harry is hanging around outside. Ginny joins him. Suddenly the fields go up in flame and Harry realizes that Bellatrix Lestrange is responsible so he chases after her. In the meantime Fenrir Greyback appears and attacks Ginny. Harry fights off Bellatrix and saves Ginny.

Don't know how much of that is actually in the movie. I have the feeling that Harry defeating Bellatrix and Greyback singlehandedly is just video game bullshit. It has to be. On the other hand I remember the fields on fire in one of the trailers so I know that at least happens. Greyback probably attacks Ginny as well. Just a guess.

It was a fun level anyway

Bellatrix and Fenrir together would be like Spidey handily taking out both Venom and Carnage - it could happen, but it would be the fight of his life, and he would have to surprise the both of them. So its possible for Harry, but it is an extreme possibility, way way out there. Bellatrix is a major button-pusher, psych-wise, before you even get to her raw power. Plus, the way Fenrir attacks, it wouldn't be long before Ginny was mauled, infected or both. Now, keeping him and Ginny alive and safe long enough to find help? That's a lot more possible. But it would be a lot more dodging than fighting.

Not in the book.

Harry and Ginny would not a be a match for Bellatrix. Together, Ginny, Hermoine and Luna, were only barely able to keep from getting killed when they took on Bellatrix. She has a killer instinct, they don't.

Greyback is a predator. I don't remember, but I think that in HP Universe, werewolves are durable creatures able to hold up to magical attacks for a bit (Greyback was hit by 3 stunning spells before he went down).

I think this movie will be good, the teen angst will be a bit heavier in this movie than any of the others, the end alone will be worth it.

The next 2 movies will be awesome.

No it wasn't in the book. From what I understand the scene was an invention of Steve Cloves made with the permission of JK Rowling because the first half of the movie lacked much in the way of action. It probably also helped prop up the Harry/Ginny love story as well.

It will be interesting to see how it plays out on screen. I don't see Harry taking both Belllatrix and Greyback down in the film. Harry's good but he's not that good. Not yet.

I suspect that Gojirob is correct and Harry will be fending the duo off until help can arrive.

Ah yes, the Potions Princess strikes...

I have ZERO intention of giving Rowlwing one more dollar in royalties for the botched abortions that are Books 6 and 7 or the movies made from them.

Which needs all the propping up it can get since there is NOTHING to indicate anything other than that Ginny is a whiney/creepy stalker fan-girl in the first five books and then all of a sudden Harry starts getting all "green eyed monster" over her. (Remember how "dear old Mummy" got "dear old Daddy"...)

Meanwhile the brightest witch of her age is swapping spit with a drooling, egotistical mouth breather who has anger management and jealousy issues. Oh, and turning BACK into the bossy little meddler that she grew out of being two books back...

Hmm, I'm not sure, that book in particular is full of it. (All of which makes no sense in context of that aspect from the previous books, but thats a rant for another day...).

Harry simply isnt that good, period. It was summed up by Snape in a line from either book six or seven, where he tells Voldemort that Harry only survives the ordeals he has been through by "a combination of luck and more talented friends".

Part of success in life does come from choosing the right friends, wizard or not. Wasn't this same point emphasized in the first meeting between Draco and Harry?

^^ Sure, but having wizards of the power and skill of Hermione, Dumbledore and Sirius and the like as his friends, doesnt change the fact that Harry himself is pretty average.
