I wasn't around when it went down, but if my understanding of the event is correct, it was over Trip being killed in the Enterprise series finale. People were upset that A) It was a bad episode, B) It was a meaningless death in a bad episode, and C) It was a meaningless death that occured in the holodeck of a bad episode. So, people would declare Trip "Not. Dead.". For those who were around then... am I close?

Not.Dead was related to Trip and These Are the Voyages (last episode of Enterprise). People who were unhappy with his death started posting Not.Dead avatars with his picture. Then other people started wearing avatars with other pictures on them besides Trip (I think I had one with Admiral Jarok and Not.Dead).

But I wasn't actually going for Not.Dead, but just Not.Canon (not as common, but I've seen it before). Plus, using the horrible abomination of the Wand of Gamelon seemed an appropriate subject.

The Not.Dead thing started pretty shortly after TATV aired, and the death of a main character is quite a big spoiler.

I don't know... I suppose by the time it was in full swing everyone had already seen it? Or the spoilers for that episode weren't strongly enforced. I honestly don't remember.

I remember being spoiled even before the episode aired. At the time an insider working on the show was posting in the ENT forum about how everyone hated the episode and talked about it in detail before it aired.
Maybe the spoiler rules were introduced afterwards, though.
