What's with all the 'Canon Violation' avatars?

Not being too knowledgeable on ex-Presidents from that era, I'm not sure what the violation refers to...or is it just a play on words, nothing more?

Care to educate an ignorant Brit? (And I'm not being sarcastic, BTW - I genuinely want to know).

It's really just a play on words--though James Buchanan (president from 1857 to 1861) is often ranked as the worst president in US history.

The violation would be taking poor President Buchanan's name in vain, purely for the sake of a cheap pun.

Which is why he has that slightly confused expression on his face, as if to say: "WTF--what did I do?"
