In Jake's case, he probably would have been too shy to approach Kira or perhaps thought he didn't have a real chance with her anyway. No, that doesn't really make sense to me. You might perhaps make a case that the Jadzia part of Jadzia Dax's personality found Sisko attractive but wouldn't admit it to herself because the Dax part of her personality thought of him as an old friend (of Curzon's) in a very non-erotic, non-romantic way... maybe Jake would feel that it's inappropriate to have a crush on an older woman...No, those desires exist all right. It's just that they wouldn't normally act upon them for various reasons (inappropriateness, shyness, etc.,). It's like having a private fantasy about a co-worker at the job who is really off-limits...If they would not normally have those desires, then they're not secret but non-existent.![]()

That's probably where the subsconscious part of it comes from that Bashir actually mentioned. You do have people that simply aren't aware of their true feelings for one another until something drives it to the surface or until a rare opportunity presents itself.but Kira and Bashir? If they ever had any real attraction for each other - anything nearly that strong that they would start locking lips as soon as their inhibitions were lifted - what reason would either of them have to be shy or inhibited about it?
Whether or not they decide to pursue that relationship or pretend a brief moment of passion never happened is up to the persons involved, IMO...
