What's the worst canon decision in the history of Trek?

In that case, maybe in the MU you get a promotion when you foul up your work. :D

It actually makes a lot of sense, considering that the Terrans were conquered and enslaved by the Cardassian/Klingon Alliance.

You don't want to have to have your slaves to be too smart, so that they might succesfully rise against you, but also not too dumb to do work for you ;)

I am not sure, the Spartans kept their slaves in squalor and treated them very badly while the Athenians had smart slaves that got an education and were relatively treated well... Guess what society was the most successful in the long run? In Rome after the revolt lead by Spartacus, the condition of slaves actually improved notably. I don't think it's smart to keep the people that work for you too unhappy.

Yeah, but that's actually another point for this thread:

The decission to make the villains in the MU cartoonish evil.

You know, now that has been mentioned, that did bug me when it appeared on ENTERPRISE.

I really didn't like the Suliban having it, and its use in "MINEFIELD" shouldn't have happened. That is really my only gripe about "MINEFIELD", which was an otherwise excellent episode.

All the appearances of cloaking devices prior to 'Balance of Terror'.

I unfortunately have to agree with that.

"Balance of Terror" is a wonderful classic Star Trek episode. But, it really doesn't work quite as well if the cloaking device was a known technology due to events depicted in ENT and DSC.

I like both those shows...so I'm not about to protest and throw molotov cocktails at the studio or anything....but this is a rare example of where I think a retcon or whatever was a negative.

YMMV

I don't like that (Archer's) Enterprise is artificially forced to ignore obvious technological improvements because of "canon". I mean if the price of canon is making the heroes look like idiots then it's too high. I mean, they meet with the holodeck/holographic technology TWICE and both times all they had to do is ask to acquire it ("Unexpected" and "Oasis") So why didn't they? It doesn't make any sense and that's a lousy way of keeping "canon" straight. Same thing with cloaking technology. Trip learns to use the Suliban cloaking device (You'd think he'd put his findings in a technical journal or something) but he doesn't and they forget all about it. Archer even gets cloak piercing technology and uses it at least on another occasion. So why would it be forgotten? As I said that doesn't make any sense and that's bad storytelling.

I always through the holographic technology was more the nature of the graphics and usability than the technology itself. The Enterprise in TAS had a holographic room of some sort, DIS has a similar weapons training room. For all we know, the holodeck first shown in Encounter at Farpoint was, to Riker's eyes at least, something so high definition and a UX first that it did blow him away.

A lot of advanced technology gets set up for the sake of drama and forgotten or disabled later.

It makes sense if the Federation is against stealing alien technology.

...
-TNG introduces the characteristic look of Klingons with those iconic foreheads. I don't know for sure, but I could imagine that back then people didn't ask too many questions on why they looked so different than in TOS. It was probably seen as a simple question of design and I think there was, unlike today, no urge to demand an in-universe explanation for everything.

...
Well, the TOS movies. And there was plenty of speculation about it. Tie-in stuff like novels and RPG sourcebooks even offered some pretty detailed explanations.

See, I don’t understand how any canon decision can be “the worst”. If anything it’s a good thing if an overused element is run into the ground eventually. You just create your original story so it doesn’t rely on that part of the canon — that’s all! If you don’t like the way the Borg evolved, create your own iconic society somewhere else in the galaxy. Also, be prepared to fail if your own creation doesn’t make the viewer forget all about the Borg, instead of waiting with bated breath for them to appear… one more time. But that’s OK and a natural part of the learning curve.
