To be cute and to show us from the start that Book was a big softie. Every Trek show could use a cat. TOS could've used more cats, especially since Spock was clearly a cat person.

Does a pet need a purpose? What a weird thread. I suppose if Grudge has any purpose at all, it's to keep Book company. That's what my kitty is for.
