What's the longest you've ever worked on anything?

Cheapjack

Fleet Captain
I've been working on a project since 2007. I'm about a week away from completion. It could give me a job, but the last time I tried, it all fell flat and I'm really sick of trying.

If it doesn't work, I suppose I'll just have to do a Steve McQueen, from the Great Escape, and go back into my 'prison cell', with my ball!

How long have you ever worked on anything?

I've been working on a high fantasy story for about three years now.

I don't know why, but I can't seem to finish it. :sigh:

Well, that's good. Good luck.

It's very much pull yourself up by your own bootstraps, writing.

Actually, the internet can be a cheap form of psychotherapy!

I'm having a problem with one of my characters. I started writing him when I was depressed, and he seems to be the personification of my depression, which was completely unintentional. He's an awesome character.

But, I'm not depressed anymore, and I can't figure out how to write him.

It seems like all good writers are either depressed or nuckin' futs. You just can't be sane and be a good writer.

:sigh:

My sanity for a publishing deal.

Spent 7 years working on getting my engineer's license, between college, work, testing, etc. Not a lot of fun.

You will do it. I can remember every state of mind I have been in, with some prompting, such as smells, songs, pictures, books.

Try that.

Actually, I've been wanting to write Science fiction from the age of 10. It may take me till I'm 60. I can wait.

I have this massive, sci-fi epic I started writing in 1999 that I got about 85% done with, then abandoned in 2003. I've recently gone back to it and started a rewrite, keeping in mind all the places I went wrong with it the first time around.

And if I want to go even further back, I still work in the sci-fi universe I created when I was 8. It has changed a lot in 20 years but I still deal with it frequently. After a bunch of short stories and diversions and brainstorming, I got my first full novel based on it done last year.

Really, the longest i've ever worked on, done, maintained or anything like that is my marriage. It's been 30 years.

Other than that, i don't have a whole lot of attention span. I get completely obsessed with something, do it for a while and then stop.

I spent 4 yrs in law school and am re-taking the Bar.

Hubby went back to school--Pharmacy school. They said his Bachelor's was too old and he had to retake all the math/science. So that was almost 7 yrs total.

Add my going back to school and I've spent 1/3 of my life with one of us in grad school. I'm tired of it. We want to live and enjoy!!

I've been working on a novel since 2006. I even used a portion of it as my thesis in 2009.

I feel like I'll never finish it! I go through dry spells where I can't write one sentence without wanting to trash it, and then I'll have days where I write entire chapters without having to stop for a break. Why, brain, why? I have no discipline as a writer, I suppose.

that's what my friend who's a mental health counselor told me when I told her I couldn't finish a story.

It's true. All the best writers were a bit mental.

I have a ton of unfinished projects, some of which are years old. I have one unfinished novella that I can think of that dates back to the 80s.

I resemble that remark.

I've been working on myself for 40 years now. The project isn't going very well and I think about scrapping it from time to time.

From the first day I entered any type of college to when I got my degree was 19 years.

You know if I get to live for several thousand years I might actually put together a pretty good life.

Spent 5 years earning a Library Technology certificate to add to my Bachelor's in History.

Have spent two nights a week or so for the last two years helping a friend build a railroad in his basement. We're about three or four months from it's first operating session right now, and looks like about three years from completing the current phase of the railroad.

I've been working on deck plans for the refit Enterprise (TMP) off & on for almost 9 years... mostly just a little hobby / labor of love / sanity maintainer - especially during this time being laid off. I've only got MSPaint so "frustrating challenge" is an understatement.

I'm finally at the point that I'm "happy" with the exterior (thanks to the tons of reference pics of the studio model that came out after the Christie's auction, as well as HD screencaps on TrekCore) so I might actually post something in the art forum one of these days, though I don't feel worthy...

I've spent 6 years trying to teach my husband that the bathtub is NOT a laundry hamper.

No success yet, but I keep trying.

I've been working on that for 30 years, and thinking about trading it in for something younger and spicier.
