Vic Fontaine? Seemed like another hologimmick at first, but by the nd of DS9 I was completely sold. I can't imagine seeing "What You Leave Behind" without his rendition of "The Way You Look Tonight." That's one of the most emotionally affecting scenes in all of Star Trek, AFAIC. It may be hard to translate the musical side of the character to prose, but someone ought to try it, pally.

Klag appears in A Singular Destiny, and his scenes do reveal what has become of some of his crew members since A Burning House.
As for Munro and Hazard Squad, since they haven't been included in the Novelverse, the only we'd find out about them is if a third Elite Force game came out, but since the license has moved on from Actavision, I doubt that will happen.

I second Vic Fontaine. Like a lot of DS9 supporting characters, the timeskip left him blowing in the wind - the last time I remember seeing him was in one of the Mission Gamma books.

And obviously, the Dominion...

Oh that wonderful, enormous and formerly well-told cast. Trier, Vedik Yevir, Opaka, Taran'atar, the Even Odds, the O'Briens since the Never-Ending Sacrifice, Counselor Matthais, Macet ... .

The list really goes on, and it does sadden me that none of these characters (except perhaps (hopefully!) the Chief & Keiko in Brinkmanship, maybe) will likely be focused on in upcoming DS9 lit.

Yeah, didn't that end with Kirk coming up with some sort of awesome idea for what he and his friends were going to do next that was never actually told to the reader?

If Kirk is REALLY still alive in 2381, wouldn't he be quietly residing at his home on Chal for some self-imposed exile?

As for the O'Briens, I hope so because MacCormack has as much an excellent grasp of them as she does her various Cardassian characters.

It is of course not the only ds9 lit that will be released over the years to come (hopefully 2013 will involve some titles). However I think that the expansive cast of the relaunch books will likely never get the coverage provided by the depth of the Mission Gamma & Worlds of DS9 books. Is that a reasonable assumption to make?

It has been too long since those books and that tapestry were made. Time has ensured that the editors are different and that the authors are mostly different. Thankfully, DRG and McCormack are wonderful survivors of that canon, and are writing DS9 to lesser or greater extents. * But the Relaunch has - understandably - been lost among the other series and demands, and due to fewer book numbers and these issues, I expect the direction that would see those secondary and ancillary characters of the relaunch be used as name drops or scenery at most.

* The Never-Ending Sacrifice is my favourite Trek novel. I think it was amazing that it was commissioned, given its unique approach to the IP, and it is a wonderful book to hold up as testament to the literacy capacity of tie-in fiction.

I always wanted to see Martus Mazur, the El-Aurian from DS9's "Rivals" again. "Rivals" is far from the best Star Trek episode, but I liked the character.

Although the covers of DRG's duology - especially the second seemingly other-side-of-the-wormhole's station - promise an exciting new direction for the series, and indeed life for the characters therein. But I still think many of the wonderful secondary cast of the early Relaunch will not really be returning in depth if at all

I don't see why you would think that. If they're still on the station, which seems pretty likely to me, then I don't see any reason at all to think we won't see more of them.

If I remember correctly, didn't the ex-Borg Hugh die in some book leading up to Destiny? And didn't he procreate with another ex-drone who was taken from a Federation ship? Whatever happened there, with Hugh's people?

That stuff happened in Greater Than The Sum, and I believe that was the last time we saw Hugh's followers. Didn't they also join up with the Unimatrix Zero rebels?
