What would you change about this series?

Major fixes for writing, especially those dealing with poor pacing, actual or possible plot holes, weak character development, some clunky dialogue, and more.

And after that the more minor problems, like uniforms, set design, and the portrayal of the Klingons.

1. I'd have the characters all very static, ethically superior, and immensely agreeable
2. Lots of talking. Long, involved, convoluted discussions around a conference table would be a great start.
3. Less action and adventure. The more static you can make the show, the better. Star Trek should never be exciting. We are all above that. Intelligent viewers don't need or want excitement. And make no mistake about the intelligence of we the viewers
4. Please wrap up everything and answer every question by the end of the episode. Explain everything clearly at all times
5. Sanctimonious and pretentious lecturing at the end of every episode about the rock-solid moral superiority of the Federation and its policies.
6. No conflict. It's unrealistic to have opposing viewpoints and ideologies. Especially unrealistic to have those lead to arguing or violence.
7. Gene's vision
8. It should be fun. Let's laugh a lot. Like let's get some colon jokes, dick jokes, infidelity jokes, weed jokes, etc. Joke it up. Laff riot.
9. Paint the bridge white, pink, and fluorescent yellow and light with a bank of lights capable of illuminating the football field.
10. No "alien" aliens. All aliens should basically just be stereotypes or caricatures of certain human cultures or behaviors. With differnt cheap forehead appliances.
11. Most important: make it exactly like the 100's and 100's of hours of Star Trek that have come before. Complete with cookie-cutter template characters, anomaly/planet/reset button of the week stories, basic A/B plot story structures, etc.

Yeah, that's a reasonable list of things they should do. Otherwise, i threaten to watch it every single week and point out every place where it fails to match my expectations.

That is some committed sarcasm right there.

I have seen a fair amount of complaints about this show, so I have to ask, what would you want changed about this series?
Like many people here, I dislike subtitles and nothing but Klingon being spoken. I also think the redesign of the Klingon appearance is more akin to a giant roach than the unique warrior styles as seen in Star Trek Next Generation. In the Next Generation, each Klingon had some individual differences in skull ridges, hair, and even personality. In Discovery, all Klingons are essentially hairless and slimy looking. Another thing is that if you look closely enough, you can see the actors real nose behind the facial prosthesis, by way of the flared Klingon nostrils.
Another sore point is that Michelle Yeoh is a far better Captain figure than this English dude (who I came to loathe in the Patriot movie). Big mistake letting her go.

We haven't encountered a single Klingon with the flat forehead genetic mutation which will be common place in 10 years.

without knowing where they are going on story wise its hard to say what id change.. unless i wanted to act like a butthurt fanboy. i will say the constant subtitles for the klingons could go. not because i dont enjoy listening but constantly reading the bottom of screen makes it difficult to watch the pretty beautiful job they did on the sets and the atmosphere. i have to rewatch those scenes... just those as i go

I just don't see why subtitles should have to be used for more than a minute or so. Just establish the scene, then switch to English so the viewer at home can more easily understand it. Why would they do it any other way?

I think they really just miscalculated on this one. Probably figured it's a unique draw to the series, makes the Klingons more alien, and brings happiness to the Klingon language fans out there.

Wait, is this not a good thing?

:D

The klingons. Please speak English without subtitles. Please remove the heavy emotion removing makeup so we can see how they feel.

I would get rid of the holograms and the idea that Vulcans can communicate over light years.

Also how about showing more professional behavior. A star fleet officer trained for years in security and she sets up her own death in such a foolish manner?

Most of this sounds perfect :)

Some Klingon should look like HemQuch or Quchha'
No spore drive.
Uniforms close to the Cage or n early version.
No holographic communication
No site to site regular transporting
No replicators.
Computer is no more advanced than the 1701
Less dark

So the Discovery's computer should have less capabilities than my smartphone?

not inconceivable, your smartphone has many features that makes it a pretty vulnerable piece of technology, and there is no reason to believe that an entertainment device would resemble technology on board a space station or submarine even today. The computers aboard our current space fairing vessels don't at all resemble your smartphone, same thing with many of our ships and submarines.

Your smart phone is "capable" of entertainment and navigation for your purposes, not particularly for space fairing or military purposes.

I think you're confusing looks with capability. The navigational computers today, far exceed what your phone can do for THAT purpose, and look very crude compared to yours, in fact all the Apollo spacecraft have systems that look crude compared to your phone, and your phone is still inadequate to perform the function needed, cause your phone wasn't designed to do so.

I'd think in the future, with the applications discussed in STD, there is a degree with interface where "less is more" that I would think is more advantageous.
