What will the next decade bring?

So we just need to expand the airports until they all merge into one glorious whole? We can call it airstrip one :bolian:

In the next five years, I'll get two college degrees, get married and perhaps have a kid, and move away from the DC area for good. By the end of the 2010s, I hope to have a house with a fenced backyard for my aging Beagle, and children entering grade school, while my then wife and I will be working at good schools.

I would love to see a fully functioning space station, with a permanent population, being used as a staging post for further manned expeditions into space. And a base on the Moon too please :)

I hope you're are correct about your personal predictions. :)

However, my crystal ball for the ISS shows that it is as fully functional as it will ever get. In other words, don't expect much more. It will continue to be a money pit that produces little science for the money "invested" in it. In all likelihood, it will be retired by the end of this decade. I don't think it will be replaced for some time.

If we're lucky, personnel living on it will have at least accomplished research about long-term human habitation in space that can be used for future missions to Mars. That's the one area where the ISS can potentially provide useful science that can't be accomplished more cheaply via other means.

It also won't serve as a staging post For one thing, the expeditions to the moon and Mars won't be this decade. For another, when they occur, there probably won't be a space station and the parts of the Mars mission likely will be docked together in LEO and then sent off to their destination directly from LEO.

A moon base is pie in the sky for now.

Ironically enough, those are often found at airports as well....

Damn. I really need to take up flying, wouldn't you say?

Okay, how about food pills? Anybody? And diet pills don't count. I'm talking about you chew one pill, and you taste steak, or hamburger or something, and after one pill, you're full.

The science is going to ramp up, heading towards the Singularity in 2025. We'll see some amazing stuff in the next decade.
