What will the next decade bring?

Fire and brimstone coming down from the skies, rivers and seas boiling, forty years of darkness, earthquakes, volcanoes, the dead rising from the grave, human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together...mass hysteria!

Also, more crummy remakes and more Uwe Boll films.

Personally, I will probably be retired by the end of the next decade.

And also own a house....

As I mentioned in the other Thread, I'm hoping that the Millennium and the terrorist attacks just threw off the historical cycle a bit, and this next decade is a social renaissance decade like the 60s and the 20s. The culture could use a little color and sparkle.

As for Science and Technology, computers will continue to get faster and, most importantly, smaller. I'm betting we have animated tattoos by the end of the decade. I'm also hoping that commercial space travel will reach critical mass and be a game changer for space exploration. And new space telescopes will almost certainly discover Earth-like planets and very likely be able to determine if they are life-bearing; no evidence of intelligence is likely to be found, though.

CGI will progress to the point where animated movies can be made that are indistinguishable from live action, and the likenesses of dead actors will be licensed to star in new films. Perhaps we'll even get the return of the real Star Trek with the original cast.

If the next decade will bring forty years of darkness, some weird shit will be happening with general relativity.

I will tell you what the next decade will bring. It will bring surprise...surprise and fear...fear and surprise....The two weapons are fear and surprise... and ruthless efficiency....The three weapons are fear, surprise, and ruthless efficiency...and an almost fanatical devotion to the Pope....The four...no...Amongst the weapons...Amongst the weaponry...are such elements as fear, surprise...

i foresee several possible scenarios for my life:

1. i will still be in my boring ass job and have done nothing to get my book published. high probability factor.

2. my book will have been published and been a failure and i'm still in my crappy ass job. medium to high probability

3. my book will have been published and been a moderate success and i've left my crappy ass job and started writing a second book. medium.

4. my book is published and is a decent success and is trapped in development hell to be turned into a franchise. i've left my crappy ass job. medium to low.

5. my book is published, beats Twilight in popularity levels and is a huge movie franchise, my crappy ass job is gone, i'm married and have at least one kid. low.

6. my book is published, outsells the bible, is a huge movie franchise. my second novel sells more copies than Harry Potter and becomes a TV sensation. My shitty job is gone, I've scored Megan Fox as my wife. extremely low probability.

i'd prefer 4 or 3 to happen. but would love 5 or 6.

Well, we still have another year to think about what the next decade will bring, seeing as this one doesn't end till 2010 ends.

This all stemming from the fact that there was no year 0. Things just went from 1bc straight to 1ad.

Or did someone already mention this earlier in the thread? I came in late and was to tired to read the entire thing.

Edit: Oops, looks like the Op did in fact state the next ten years in the body of the post even though the title stated the next decade.

Well, we still have another year to think about what the next decade will bring, seeing as this one doesn't end till 2010 ends.

That's different. The year 0, or lack thereof, has no relevance to the concept of a "decade". True, a decade is 10 years, but more specifically, it's whichever number is common to those ten years. For example, the "1980's" means simply every year with some form of 198x in the name. Nothing more than that. It makes no sense to call 1990 a part of the 1980's, since 1990 has no 80 in it.

Similarly, 2010 cannot logically be part of the "2000's" since 2010 does not contain the number 2000 within it; the 2010's are all years which begin with 201x (i.e. 2010, 2011, etc.).

Clearly the next ten years will see continued debate on the year 0 (or lack thereof) and what constitutes a decade, century and millenium.

But there was no decade numbering from 0 AD to 10 AD, there was only 1 AD to 10 AD; nine years does not a decade make.
