What went "right" for you with Voyager?

For me, it was Tuvok. Not only did he show that not all Vulcans were carbon-copy clones of Spock, but he kind of cemented the idea that Vulcans suppressed their emotions because they were more dangerous or self-destructive than Human emotions.

Second, was the one-time only appearance of the Swarm. To me, they were what the Borg originally were--a mysterious, hostile race you really couldn't communicate with (much less reason with) that simply kept coming at you until they overwhelmed you with superior numbers. The Voyager barely got away from them the first time--but if the Swarm had the ability to adapt to the ship's technobabble solution, it might not have, IMO. Another confrontation would have required them to have been watered down, so it was probably right they only appeared once (I'm deliberately ignoring the few seen casually in the background watching the match in "Tsunkatske").

The Doctor and Reg Barclay are one of the best Trek characters. I really like many of the other characters as well. The premise was great. The theme song is the best out of all five series and Voyager is a beautiful ship.

Whoa, I missed them! I do recall seeing the Vaddwair is "Tsunkatse", but not the swarm aliens. Thanks for the heads up.

to see the bitterly funny situation
ITA!

EMH: Missing. The Captain is missing. It seems I’ve found myself on the voyage of the damned. Very well. Please advise the highest ranking officer who is not missing, to see me at his earliest convenience. You may shut off my program now.

I love that scene from "Time And Again". That was probably the turning point for me when it comes to The Doctor. When I watched "Caretaker", I took an immediate liking to all the characters, something which seldom happens when I watch a new series. I thought they were just great. The only one I did have a problem with was The Doctor. I thought that the whole thing with a holographic doctor was a bit over the top. But in "Parallax" and "Time And Again", the few doubts I did have were gone and that scene with The Doctor, Kes and Neelix in sickbay when he speaks about "the voyage of the damned" really made me laugh. It was such an appropriate comment. "This guy (or hologram) is actually funny, I thought. :techman:

I agree re: liking all the characters initially, although the interaction between the EMH and the crew that first ep seemed to set up quite a few potential conflicts with the simple problem of "remembering to turn OFF the program, and the ability to turn off the program in mid sentence.

Going back to that humorous scene in "Time & Again", it was also nice to see the reality of two crews coming together.

EMH: Yes, terribly wrong. Your brain is not on file. Either your government failed to transmit the standard 15-5-01 crew personnel report or somebody at Starfleet medical really fouled up.
KES: I’m not a member of the starfleet crew.
NEELIX: We came aboard at mid-expedition.
EMH: And no one asked you for your medical histories when you arrived? Of course not. That would be the ship’s Doctor’s job. My job, if anyone had bothered to tell me about new passengers, but I seem to be just about the last to know about everything around here. So, tell me, just how many other new arrivals are there?
NEELIX: Just us.
KES: And the crew from another ship that was destroyed.
EMH: Another crew. That’s nice. This is the Emergency Medical Holographic system to Captain Janeway.
NEELIX: She’s not on board. She’s missing on the surface of a planet.

Not only did I like the humor, but I liked the fact that everyone seemed to treat him as a "mechanical man" ( I think Neelix called him that in Elogium"), except Kes. I really liked the relationship that developed between kes and the EMH.

What went right with VOY?

-High production values. I thought the show was often a visual delight.
-Compression rifles-very nice and streamlined.
-Wrist lamps-made more sense than the hand held ones on TNG
-The Doctor
-Seska
-Jeri Ryan & Seven of Nine (to a lesser extent)
-Torres (for the most part)
-Scorpion Part One
-Captain Geordi LaForge
-Tuvok on the Excelsior (not the episode itself) & Kang v. Sulu
-Vidiians, Hirogen, Species 8472

1)The opening theme, above all, which was excellent and fit in with the show premise perfectly.

2)The pilot episode

3)The ship itself and it's features

4) The close bond between the crew

5) Doctor and Seven of Nine

6) "Timeless"

There are more, but these are just on top of my head.

I guess I'll have to chime in on the ship. I like the design, too. I hated it for several years, because it was not the Enterprise-D and therefore must suck, right? But, gradually, I came to like it and now it's the Galaxy class ships that look strange and unwieldy to me.

I'll have to tentatively disagree on the doctor, though. I'll refrain from expressing my opinion more completely 'till after I've watched the last 2.5 seasons, but I'm not feeling much love for him. I do often laugh at his jokes, however.

I agree that The Doctor was the best thing about Voyager. And Seven of Nine the best Voyager eye candy.

Here's my list--best to worst:
The Doctor
Seven of Nine
Neelix
Tuvok
Tom Paris
Harry Kim
Kes
B'Elanna Torres
Chakotay
Captain Kathryn Janeway

Mines a little different

Seven of Nine
Janeway (Captain)
B'Elanna Torres
Kes
Icheb
Tuvok
Tom Paris
Harry Kim
Neelix

On the Worst side

The Doctor
Chakotay

Reasons:
Harry Kim was more MANLY than Chakotay.
Janeway was more Manly than Chakotay.
Seven was more MANLY than Chakotay
KES was more MANLY than Chakotay.

I've never seen a "man" run from a fight more times than Chakotay. He was a push over.

The Doctor in the end became obsessive. The Holographic THIS and Holographic THAT and HOLOGRAPHIC Rights.

The crew is loveable- there are many interesting episodes and some really great episodes. But most importend for me to watch Voyager is-- CHAKOTAY - THE MAN.

Yeah, we're pretty much polar opposites. Our lists are completely different, and I liked the holographic rights episode.

However, we did find some common ground in the Chakotay character--you have him as your least favorite character, and I have him as my least favorite character save one.

Seven of Nine.

Only reason I watched the show after the snooze-fest that was season 3.

I personally loved the characters of the show as well as the storyline. A ship being stranded 70,000 light years from home was a pretty interesting idea. Also the thought of having a female captain sent me leaping for joy when I was 14! :D

I also liked the concept of a family, and Voyager really portrayed that very well. In a way, the cast was like my adopted family at times and, in a crazy, odd way, were there for me when RL friends and family weren't.

I also loved the doctor..he was by far, one of the funniest and greatest Trek characters ever portrayed on a show! He was dry, witty, and at times just downright hilarious! I remember watching him every week and sometimes laughing when he complained to a crewmember and then when he got his mobile holo emiter, he was like: "in short I am footloose and fancy-free!" :D I related alot to his character because he felt sometimes underappreciated by the crew..and i felt underappreciated by my peers in school, as well as college. It was tough, but I learned to cope through watching Voyager. :)

Voyager got these things right...

1. The Casting in general & their performances
2. Supporting character: Seven of Nine
3. Lead character: Janeway (Even with her bipolar personality)
4. Humor: The Doctor
5. The look of the ship (inside and out)
6. Cool villains: The Borg
7. The Sense of Family
8. The goal to get home
9. The time episodes
10. Romantic Relationship: Tom / B'elanna
11. Mentor Relationship: Seven / Janeway
12. Sexiness: Seven of Nine in her different colored cat suits
13. The Final Episode
14. One of the best Trek two parters: Scorpion Parts 1 & 2
15. Cool Inventions: Delta Flyer / Astrometrics
16. Happy But Sad Moments: One / Kes leaving / Tuvok kills Neelix
17. Best Bud Relationship: Tom / Kim
18. Romance: Janeway had feelings for a Holodeck dude
19. Moral Standards: Janeway had a strong sense of right and wrong
20. Minor Characters Episode: Good Shepherd

Voyager hooked me immediately thanks to the opening sequence, not just the music but the graphics. It's a good-looking ship with a good bridge layout.

Seeing a female captain was a joy and I took to Janeway immediately. Like many others my favourite character is the Doctor, though Torres is a close second. She's a good but flawed character who never really conquers her self-doubts and her conflicting halves. The sense of family among the crew is another strong point.

I'm serious, folks. What did you especially like about Voyager? Story lines, characters, solitary ship against the odds, specific seasons, weapons?

I assume most people can point to something, since we're still hanging around a website dedicated to a show that went off the air 9 years ago this spring, with no prospects of a new movie :brickwall: (I LOVE this icon, thanks to whomever just used it in the Dark Frontier thread!) or miniseries in our lifetime.

Voyager had the following strong plus points:

- good stories (Tuvix, Pray, the killing game, etc.)
- good characters (Janeway, Chakotay, Tuvok, the Doctor - well in my opinion these were the best)

The negatives were:

- poor characterisation of the Borg. If the Borg could drain the Enterprise-D of its shields via a tractor beam, then how come Voyager as a tactically inferior ship not be affected by this?

- lopsided character development. We never knew what tribe Chakotay came from  Harry Kim was an Ensign for seven years, when he should have been a Lt. Cmdr, at least IMO.

Voyager was a good show, but with better planning and execution could have been an excellent series like TNG and DS9 (well as the other 24th century setting shows).

I don't see what was so bad about Kim being an ensign so long. I mean no one else got promoted aside from Paris and that was more a punishment/not punished thing than anything else. And Tuvok's promotion was a costuming screwup.

I too see no reason to promote Harry. In a few more years Voyager would have been awash in Lt Commanders and Commanders, all itching for Janeway's job. ;-)

You are right about Tuvok & Paris. They both had costume screwups in season 1 which were corrected, and Paris was demoted and repromoted (word?) after his 30days incident.

Tuvok finally did get promoted during the "7of9" years... remember Paris and Kim telling the story about adjusting the Vulcan's meditation program during the promotion dinner? The Vulcan monk kept saying..."Live long and Prosper".
