What We Left Behind - Documentary Update Confirms *Some* HD Remastering

Funnily, that reminds me of how strict the producers became regarding TOS references at some point during TNG's run. Someone on this forum once submitted a script that had a little moment where the Enterprise gets a report about a pest control issue on a starbase and then Riker quips "somebody must have fed a Tribble". It was just a cute little moment, but apparently Jeri Taylor immediately stopped reading the submitted script and cited that bit as the reason for rejecting it outright. References to TOS, not matter how minor, were apparently one of the big no nos enforced by producers because there was this sense that the bosses wanted TNG to stand on its own as if TOS never existed. So when writers like Ron Moore were able to slip in a reference that the bosses wouldn't catch, it felt like a little victory for them. This is the kind of thing that Ira Behr fought Rick Berman over on episodes like "Sarek" where Berman didn't want Spock's name to ever be brought up (which is why we get moments like Picard mentioning "I met Sarek at his son's wedding", as opposed to "I met Sarek at Spock's wedding").
But I would be at some point the powers that be may ease on the rules sometime down the line. By Season 5 of TNG, the producers were finally more comfortable about making TOS references which is why we got "Unification" and then "Relics" the very next season. And IIRC, it was stated during the early part of the first season production of DISCO that no actors like Jeffrey Combs or anyone from any previous Trek incarnation would ever appear in the new show, just so newer actors could make it their own. Obviously, that strict rule got dropped as soon as they brought back Clint Howard for the season finale.
Yeah, like I said, cultural zeitgeist. It was the subject of TV and films, and I'm sure there are holodeck programmes based on the Dominion War
It doesn't mean people were chatting about the war on a daily basis, especially when it had no relevance. I'm not sure what part of the Picard season 1 story could have called for a Dominion War reference.

I agree that the Dominion War wouldn't be a typical topic of discussion for the characters, but it just takes one line. Especially in those flashback scenes when the war was only a decade or so previous. The Dominion War was costly and devastating across the board, and it should have some ripple effects to PICARD's time.
Worldwide, 9/11 is a great example of such a thing. Or for a more smaller scale, Hurricane Andrew down here in Miami. 28 years later, there is still physical and mental impact for those of us who went through it. Whether it's being more cautious during storm season, being much more leery of contractors (a LOT of them preyed upon people here, including my family), building codes getting an overhaul, or just advances in how to get aid to needed places when disasters happen in general. We don't talk about such things, but it's definitely in the minds of people at certain times.
One line of dialogue... a little goes a long way.

I think the fact that the Federation and the Romulans were ALLIES during the war should be have been mentioned. It would have been another good reason to help the people of Romulus.

Even if they felt that any mention of the Dominion War would require more than a sentence or two (it would not), there was plenty of time. Many Picard episodes were well on the short side.

The 1997 original sequence and the new, HD version re-created for the 2019 DS9 documentary "What We Left Behind" by myself and artist David Clark.
For this update, we used brand new models of the Defiant and Cardassian Galor. Other models had new texturing. All the lighting was redone as well as new pyro, laser FX and a new starfield.
However all the animation files are the originals, so the motions and camera work are an exact match to 1997 (other than the slight recomposing for widescreen).
The new sequence uses modern compositing techniques while each shot of the original was done as one render, all in-camera (can you believe it?). Everything was done in Newtek's Lightwave 3D.
This was the first big episode of DS9 that used CGI and marked the show's sudden transition from motion control and traditional VFX. The first half of the battle was done by Digital Muse, and the second half (what you see here) was by Foundation Imaging.
We had two weeks to build EVERY MODEL in the Star Trek library and two weeks to do all the shots. It wasn't close to enough time and it's a miracle the work came out as good as it did.
That being said, it was a thrill to go back and finish the scene properly. If fans are vocal enough we'd love to remaster all of DS9 and Voyager. Let CBS know you want to see HD version of ALL Trek shows on CBS All Access!
