What was "The Burn" and what caused it?

They could but they're saving it.

Dilithium was running low. 120 years ago all dilithium in active use went inert at once, causing every warp ship in the galaxy to have a warp core breach. Anything not in use during the burn continues to function and is very valuable.

OK. That makes no sense to me though.

So all they need to do is mine more to recover?

120+ years?

Or maybe it's a fear thing? No one wants to travel at warp because no one knows what caused the burn and they don't know if it will happen again?

They were already facing a galaxy-wide shortage when it happened.

And yeah, nobody knows who/what caused it or if it'll happen again.

Now that they mentioned the Red Angel suit and the wormhole in the last episode, something tells me that they're going to have Michael Burnham somehow be the source of the Burn.

With all the hinting towards that music, I would say no. But that's me. I could be wrong.
Ugh. You know, Michael, people can know a song without it being a plot coupon. I was excited for the season, and laswt week was an improvement. But now they're going back to old habits. We're supposed to hate Vance (who's probably going to be a villain, knowing Disco), because he wisely wants to sideline Discovery for a bit to figure out what's going on.

Like she learned nothing about respecting the chain of command over all this. Interrupts Saru, tells the Admiral why he's wrong and how the Disco crew is so special. And somehow Hugh Culber, the medical doctor who has been acting as de facto counselor to everyone decides that Burnham should talk to that distraught Barzan guy instead of doing it himself.

We've barely completed Act 1.

We are 5 episodes in and the Federation and Star Fleet are a smidgen of what they once were because of 'The Burn'... and they haven't given one coherent reason why that is. And they found them!

I can understand they haven't figured out what caused 'The Burn', but why exactly can't they travel between worlds at all? Dilithium crystals lasted for a 5-year mission back in the day.

None of this makes any sense. Right now, everything has gone to hell in a hand basket just because.

Well, we're all entitled to our opinions ofcourse. I have a feeling it won't be as such think it might go. But that's me. I'm still looking forward to what the rest of the season will bring.

I think that is part of the story.

At the end I'll be more annoyed if I still think it doesn't make sense.

How do you know about a shortage? Earth has plenty as stated by the Earth Defense gal...
And they're hoarding it. Why? Because there isn't a lot to go round.
I get that, I'm just not buying that no one can find more in 125 years. Hell, Spock recrystallized some...
No indication that they aren't finding new deposits just that it a rare thing now. No doubt folks like Emerald Chain are out there claim jumping and hijacking any dilithium they find out about.
