What was "The Burn" and what caused it?

I've seen people question why dilithium was still being used in the 32nd century.

I'll answer that with another question, why are wheels still being used after 6000 years?
Actually a better example would be gold and silver. These two elements have been mined and used by human civilization for countless millennia.

Burnham obviously. It's always her.
if it does turn out to be her, it will be one of the worst plot twist in fiction. I would not be surprised at it either seeing how paint by numbers generic discovery story telling is.

True, but technological use has only started very recently.
I don’t think gold and silver were used much beyond currency and decoration until the 20th century? Please correct me, if I’m wrong.

Electrical current will still be used to power computers and other equipment and devices into the foreseeable future. The only changes will be how said current is transmitted and the efficiency of that transmission.

even if not, copper has been mined just as long if not longer, and tin and arsenic not much later (arsenic can also be used to make bronze, and is more abundant than tin, but.. well there's the arsenic thing).
Tin is recycled heavily now, which is good as reserves may run out later this century.

I know we don't have the full explanation yet, but right now I'm really not digging the "dilithium go boom" thing. They already had a good explanation right there in the Omega particle, which also would have avoided any "but what about transwarp, warp powered by singularities, etc." questions.

I dunno, to me it just feels less urgent if people can still travel at warp, or quantum slipstream.

No.

That is the whole point that City on the edge of Forever made. McCoy prevented an innocent woman from being killed, and that ended up with Hitler winning the war.
You will not know how your changes will affect the tineline.

And with Time Travel technology, if there are any major consequences, future iterations of the Temporal Agency can come in and fix things as needed.

Not sure if this theory has been mentioned yet 23 pages in, but what if the reason all the dilithium exploded is the Q finally judged humans guilty?

They finally passed sentence on humans to be sent back to the planet from whence they came.
I honestly don't think anyone wants to revisit Q as more than a passing joke.

The other issue I have with "All Dilithium Crystals" go boom simultaneously is that where the HELL was Section 31?

Isn't it there job to protect the Federation?

How the eff did they let a catastrophy of this scale happen?
Section 31 is not omniscient. It is possible to do nothing wrong and still fail completely.

Most likely completely unrelated since it was a throw away, but there is this line from Season 1 "Context is for Kings"

"the reason they are being transferred there is because a pocket of dilithium went piezolectric, causing the mine to be ripped apart at the bottom and killing fifty convicts."

Hmm, I wonder if the dilithium thing has something to do with them sending Burnhams mom back? Wasn’t there something funky about the way she got dragged back to the future? I could see that having repercussions that could cause mayhem

Something caused dilithium across the galaxy to all explode at roughly the same time (not going to go into how scientifically wrong that likely is), but what happened to Romulans and their Singularity drives?

Shortages of dilithium would likely cause setbacks, but there are other ways to FTL.
