I took it as nothing more than a reference to the Laurentian Abyss, a locale that played a pivotal role in the conclusion of that other well known Orci and Kurtzman scripted sci-fi action movie, Transformers.

my theory is that starfleet hadnt paid spaceship tax on nearly all their starships so they hid in the laurentian system so they couldnt get tickets from the Space Traffic Police.

i was doing a google search and came across this thread.

So we've never had a decent answer, or even creative speculation?


It just seemed like a random star system for ships to go to. Were they doing anything there other than gather? Was it's purpose to follow the Narada? Or engage with another enemy?

I haven't followed the comics -- anyone know?

According to the Memory Beta, the Star Trek: Nero comic series (the title I always read as Star Trek: Nerd) says the Laurentian system is where Rura Penthe is, and it was Starfleet's response to the Narada's breakout and destruction of 47 Klingon Warbirds.
