What was happening in the Laurentian System?

Perhaps they were dealing with the reaction by the Klingons of having 47 of their ships destroyed.

Maybe they were caught out of position on a training exercise in the Laurentian system.
What's worse Betazed's own defense systems are obsol ....

Oh wait....:p

They didn't really explain it did they? My take it was just a rally point (RP) in case things didn't work out. You'll find them in most offensive operation orders.

I took it as nothing more than a reference to the Laurentian Abyss, a locale that played a pivotal role in the conclusion of that other well known Orci and Kurtzman scripted sci-fi action movie, Transformers.

I thought it was the Klingon attack aftermath, too; but I was pleased to hear a notable Canadian reference (Laurentian mountains) after the great contributions from Canadian actors (Shatner, Greenwood) and fans to Trek.

The fleet was gathering in the Laurentian System for the annual Starfleet picnic. Pike was supposed to bring a casserole. Which is the real, top-secret reason Spock was in such a hurry to get there.

They were all assembling there to witness the grand return of George Kirk, who is the most interesting man in the universe. Upon his return, the fleet would all partake in a jovial round of Dos Equis.

Canada also has a Laurentian University.

I know, because I teach there.

So, I figured Starfleet was attending spring convocation.

my theory is that starfleet hadnt paid spaceship tax on nearly all their starships so they hid in the laurentian system so they couldnt get tickets from the Space Traffic Police.

i was doing a google search and came across this thread.

So we've never had a decent answer, or even creative speculation?

It just seemed like a random star system for ships to go to. Were they doing anything there other than gather? Was it's purpose to follow the Narada? Or engage with another enemy?

I haven't followed the comics -- anyone know?
