Eh, I think brothers or cousins serving in Star Fleet contemporarily is one of the best ways of doing small universe syndrome. No logical stretches.
They both are on the hunt for Eden; Sybok could possibly have mentored Sevrin. This would also explain why Spock is so comfortable with the hippies in the episode. They would go their separate ways, with different interpretations of what their various hints and lore mean, with Sybok being called to Sha Ka Ree, and Sevrin using a totally different technique to decipher a different code/translate a different language that leads him to Eden. It would be the perfect kind of self contained prequel story. Spock, of course, never lets on to ANYONE that Sybok is his brother.
I hope they don't pick up on any threads from past series. They need to make their own threads.
