This is the episode that blew me away and made me fall in love with DS9, and, by extension, Trek.DS9's Duet
Acting in the beginning was bad.
Overall the episode was mediocre (IMO).

That scene is one of the only bearable parts of ST:V, IMO. Yet is the movie which started my journey into Trek and TPTB. If my ex had never dragged me to that convention... if George Takei had not asked me all those questions... then I would never have had one of my greatest life adventures!Planning to watch ST:V next.
How masochistic of you. Best of luck with that!
Why thank you. I loved that film, camp romp with some great music. Just bought the soundtrack recently, it concludes with Uhura's fab fan dance song!! Awesomeness!! (not that she sang it.. it was done by a pop group called Hiroshima).
Oh and here's a tidbit for you.. not of the fan dance but of another musical classic from ST:V.

Well, I will admit. Duet has an amazing performance by Harris Yulin (Cardassian Aamin Marritza). And I see what the episode was trying to do. But I was partially distracted by the DS9 cast's wooden acting within this episode. Also, the hateful Bajoran guy was a horrible, too.
I mean, it isn't a bad episode. It was just okay. But it is interesting how we all have different tastes and opinions on Trek episodes.

My Trek viewing has been greatly reduced due to real life, the NBA finals, NASCAR and FIFA 2010. Now that I have all 3 seasons of TOS-R, I have been rewatching them all from the beginning. (I cheated and watched some of my favorites first... Amok Time; Journey to Babel; Mirror, Mirror; etc.)
I have the DVD, but I haven't watched it since it was at the theater. Maybe I should pull it out of mothballs and give it another chance.
I think Shadows and Symbols is my favorite ep.
This morning I went ahead and started a TNG re-watch. I just finished "Farpoint".
Duet is actually an episode that I appreciate more now than when I originally watched it. For whatever reason it didn't really stand out to me the first time through, but it does have two excellent performances, and I appreciate its ambition.
I actually agree with Luther Sloan about the random Bajoran being quite horribly acted. He manages to stand out even though he only has about two or three lines in the episode, but that is a minor drawback. The other criticism I would make of this ep is that the scenario is highly contrived and perhaps doesn't stand up to a whole lot of scrutiny, but it doesn't really matter because the ideas and emotions are so solid. I especially appreciate the moment of sympathy when Kira realizes what is happening and Marritza's bluster starts to dissolve ("Why are you doing this?").

Randy S:
Damn. You actually were able to re-watch "Farpoint". Geez, I admire your strength, my friend. The episode still looms over my head like a dark cloud (and I just haven't found the courage yet to get back into finishing it again).
Why? While I can understand the fans dislike of TATV (even in I don't complete agree with them, there ARE story logic issues in that case), Farpoint was a good episode. Why do fans today dislike it so much?
