What scifi series should I watch next?

ZeNd

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
Just finished S2 terminator and looking for something else to watch. No smallville. How is supernatural? Is it a heroes clone? How about bsg? Do I have to watch the miniseries first to fully understand it?

You should check out BSG and yes, you have to watch the miniseries since it's basically the pilot that sets everything and everyone up. But it is included in the season one box set, so you don't have to rent the miniseries AND season one.

Have you tried Lost?

Are we talking current shows or any show? Babylon 5 is the greatest show ever! And LOST is pretty close behind!

BSG is outstanding, but as said, you must start with the Mini. It's also very dark, and you have to be careful how you watch it. There have been a lot of complaints about the stand-alones being a waste of time, but if you watch several episodes in a row, the whole show really makes more sense.

B5 is good -- I'm currently working my way through it in order for the first time. The first season is a little dicey, but things pick-up in the second season.

Doctor Who and Torchwood are also very good, and Torchwood gets really good in the second season.

Stargate SG-1 is good.

Firefly is short lived, but again a good show.

It would help if you listed what shows you have watched before, or at least the ones you have liked most. It would make recommending stuff easier.

Anyway, my tips:

- Farscape... If you haven't seen it already.
- NuBSG as well... Good stuff. (watch the mini-series first, since the 1st season opener is a direct contiunuation)

Avoid nu-BSG like the plague (needless to say avoid the original)

Avoid Lost like the plague

All the others mentioned are very worthwhile, minus Stargate SG-1. The series is good enough but just way to drawn out and episodic IMO. A story arc kicks off some seasons in, but the show ends on a poor note

For a short and sweet series, Firefly is a must see

Why avoid BSG?

The show will woo you, some of its realism and dark nature might seduce you. It fooled me for a while, I thought the show was great until
I got about mid way into Season2 then I realize it was all one big shitty RDM Eick smoke screen. It becomes a ship for shippers with some of the worst emo telly drama out there who is Chief sleeping with? Who is Kara Starbuck sleeping with....who gives a shit? Then after 2 seasons we have a nice bit of era of the 'ethnic cleansing' as all the actors of African heritage are killed off the series and all the males are suddenly emo and castrated. There was one episode around Season 2 where they turned the babies into prostitutes and as sick as that sounds, they pushed it even further you had an entire spaceship full of child molestors who would pay money to do things to these children. Only one character was held accountable and executed. It wasn't graphic or anything but you could see the kind of shock-jock BS Eick and RDM were trying to sell. I for one was starting to think I'm done with this over-rated show.
The best bits series like the Exodus planet jump can be seen on youtube, you don't need to trudge through a whole 22 episodes season just to watch 5 mins of quality. This Shippy Quadangle of it needed to drop kicked it out the airlock but Moore or Eick never had the brains to do it. The shipper Quadrangle took the show from being a drama into soap opera territory and if I wanted to watch Soaps(and I dont) I would turn onto watch passions, eastenders or some other tripe. They kill of characetrs not to add to the story or drama but do it just for the sake of being shocking.
You get pointless political stuff like suicide bombers and abortion. For 3 seasons of credits we hear how they cylons rebeled, there are twelve copies and they have some great god like PLAN. The great cylon plan boils down to humanity as some half-breed of humans and cylons is possibly silly, it does leave Caprica, the show, nowhere to go. The ending wih everyone going tribal is pathetic. Maybe the Singer and Richard Hatch way to do this was the right way after all.

I think you should definitely check out nuBSG. It's an amazing ride from start to finish in my opinion. And everyone I've introduced to the show so far has loved it, for what it's worth.

It's a very powerful show that's based around it's characters who are developed from season to season as the story progresses. That's why it's very important NOT to leave episodes out.

There are a few things to realize or think about. One is that the setting is, essentially, post apocalyptic. In other words, the show can be really, really dark, and this naturally has an effect on the characters. They're not exactly living under ideal conditions, which the show examines and deals with, but fight to survive.

Another thing to realize is that there are many different things that characterize the show. One is its gritty realism, for example, another are aspects such as religion and faith. They're ALL part of the show.

And, yes, you should definitely start with the Mini.

P.S.: I forgot to ask, which other sci-fi shows have you liked in the past?

Aye, BGS is good, not perfect, but good. Frankly I consider it a milestone of science fiction television along with Star Trek and Babylon 5. These are the 3 shows that revolutionized science-fiction television when they showed up. Obligatory watching I would say.

Other than that there is:

Other Star Trek Series
Stargate Sg-1
Stargate Atlantis
Farscape
Firefly plus Serenity.

But since we don't know what you have watched and liked...

Supernatural is no clone of Heroes-it's actually good! ;)

Seriously, SPN, is a great little show that doesn't get the attention it deserves because it's stuck on a network that obsesses over the teen girl demo.

Science fiction television worth watching:

The Twilight Zone (1959-1964)
Battlestar Galactica (2003-2009)
Farscape (1999-2004)
Babylon 5 (1993-1999)

None of these series are perfect. Farscape and Babylon 5 both suffer from weak first seasons. The Twilight Zone goes off track a couple times with hour long episodes and by switching from film to video. Battlestar Galactica has its detractors, but I wouldn't listen to them here. Form your own opinions and stand by them. My opinion is that it is a great series, far surpassing the original in every way. Your mileage may vary.

But, regardless of their stumbling(s), they are each, in their own way, milestone works of science fiction, and deserve your attention. If you want to know where to start with each programme, any number of posters here (including myself) would be glad to show you the way. :)

Ive already seen firefly. Why avoid BSG?

Have you been in the Trek XI forum? Have you seen the posts of Captain Robert April? Well, when it comes to BSG, TheMasterOfOrion is the equivalent. Him and stj. They hate the show, say it's a waste of time, yet are the most frequent posters and continue watching. And Orion spoiled a lot of BSG in his unibomber rant deliberately.

If you wanted to avoid being a complete asshole, you should have posted a spoiler waning, especially since you were writing this to someone who just told you they had not seen it.

Honestly, I cannot recommend nuBSG to anyone anymore. The ending is just such a ridiculous let-down that left a horrible, horrible taste in my mouth. It was just ripe with bad storytelling. Admittedly, the ride along the way is all kinds of good though. I might have been more okay with the conclusion had I not been waiting 5-6 years for it, with months and months (almost a year at times) between seasons and even half seasons.

For a little bit more of an obscure show, I'd recommend Charlie Jade. I'm getting near the end and I'm really into it. It starts off pretty slow, but it gets interesting quick. The cinematography and music are fantastic too. Plus, it was primarily filmed in Cape Town, South Africa so the setting is really interesting and varied to look at--you've got an incredible beach, good sized city, mountains, and even a desert-like area nearby in the show.
