Watching & Missing Stargate

Given I've seen all of Stargate, I'm on a franchise rewatch, drifting in and out. I am watching on DVD (though SGU S1 is on Blu-ray), so I'm just watching one or two discs at a time. Right now, I'm on S7 D4. I watched "Grace," the other episodes being "Fallout," "Chimera," "Death Knell," and "Heroes, Part 1." I haven't seen these episodes in a long time and had completely forgotten about "Grace," I just remembered the premise, but not the actual episode itself. I remember the other 4, but still looking forward to finishing out the disc. Since the last episode is part 1 of 2, I may just finish out the season.

I really love this show, and I'm glad we got a 10-year run (1997-2007) plus two films and two spin-offs. I don't really count Origins: Katherine as I found that prequel entirely unnecessary. We had all the backstory we needed in the movie and SG-1's S1 episode "The Torment of Tantalus."

Is anyone else revisiting SG-1, Atlantis, Universe, or perhaps you only like the '94 film?
Do you think the 1997-2011 version of Stargate will be back, or do you think that ship has sailed?
As much as I love SG, I feel like it's fallen into "forgotten cable show" territory.

The 94 film is still one of my favorites. I enjoy the show, largely through Season 7. Really didn't care for the Anubis stuff but overall a great show, and usually doing great planet of the week stories that are very enjoyable.
Love the '94 film, an absolute favorite. You mentioned enjoying SG-1 up through S7. Did you like "Lost City," the S7 finale? It bows out S7, sets up a cliffhanger on the fate of Colonel O'Neill, and sets up the spin-off show Stargate: Atlantis. What did you think of Season 8?

On paper I should really love Stargate, it ticks all the boxes for me, but I never managed to stick with it. I've caught important episodes from the whole run of SG-1, I've seen a couple of seasons of Atlantis and I saw all the movies, but most of it remains thoroughly unseen for me. Which is a little frustrating, considering I keep buying discs. I've got Atlantis' first season twice!

The weird thing is, Stargate Universe is the only one I've seen in its entirety. Or maybe that's not so weird, considering that it only lasted two years. I liked it though, especially the second season. Once it got past the attempts to be edgy BSG drama where everyone hates each other (with Lost-style montages to pop songs at the end), it managed to deliver some proper sci-fi.

If it helps you out, here's a quick first-time viewing watch-list for Stargate.
Stargate (film)
SG-1 (Seasons 1-7)
SG-1 (S8) / Atlantis (S1)
SG-1 (S9) / Atlantis (S2)
SG-1 (S10) / Atlantis (S3)
The Ark of Truth (SG-1 film) / Continuum (2nd SG-1 film)
Atlantis (Seasons 4-5)
Universe (2 seasons)

When you get to SG-1's final seasons and Atlantis, it's easier to jt watch the SG-1 season first, then the Atlantis season, and just go back and forth like that. If you finish SG-1 first then Atlantis, there will be some Atlantis spoilers.

For me, SG-1 is great straight out of the gate, same for Atlantis. Universe found its footing about halfway through S1.

does the 2018 Stargate - Origins fit anywhere?

Yes, you can save it for after Universe since it came out after.
The "Origins: Katherine" web-series / film serves as a prequel to the 1994 movie but taking into account the SG-1 mythology. I found it unnecessary, because the movie gave us all the backstory we needed as it is. It's not a "bad" prequel, it's a bit low budget, but worth seeing for what it is.

so then it should actually come before the original movie during a chronological watch?

Is an older version of Katherine in the later shows?

I have only seen the original movie. i watched part of origins when it was coming out in 10 minute chunks, but i'm not sure if i finished it.

I suppose you could watch the "prequel" first, but it completely spoils the entire 1994 movie, except the ending. It will also spoil episodes and concepts that will be scattered across the first two seasons of SG-1.

The 1994 movie is the one thing I can definitively say I know (but it was so long ago, I only recently realized James Spader was in it, smh.)

When the time finally comes, I will watch fully chronologically, then. Not knowing those later concepts yet will make it all look like foreshadowing lol.

Now you have me wanting to watch the prequel. I think it's on Roku, lemme check. Roku has all four films: the original 1994 film, the two SG-1 films that cap off the series, and the prequel.

The Director's Edition of the original movie is something I try and watch once a year. It's a classic.
SG1 was a great show, but the last few seasons were a bit meh. Atlantis was difficult for me to get into. I tried again about a year ago, on Prime. But it just didn't really work for me. I might have to power through season 1 next time because I heard it got a lot better later on.
Universe is something I definitely want to give a shot. Next time it pops up on Prime it will be probably be my next 'one episode a day' show.

I love how the Direct's Cut of Stargate simply restored deleted scenes.
Stargate, the 2 SG-1 films, and the prequel movie are on Roku.
Stargate SG-1 is on PlutoTV.
Stargate: Atlantis is on Amazon Prime and Hulu.
Stargate: Universe is on Aazon Prime and PlutoTV.

Given that the 1997-2011 run is more likely to be rebooted than continued, why not watch all of it?

Content for streaming services isn't the same across the world. And this is forum with members from many countries. I'm Dutch, we don't have Hulu. We have Starz on Disney+ that has some Hulu content but not Stargate stuff. Prime sometimes has SG shows for free, sometimes on a extra channel you need to subscribe to, sometimes not at all. Not sure if we have Roku and PlutoTV. Never heard anyone in the Netherlands talk about it though.

The website I use to find what is streaming where is https://www.justwatch.com. I wonder if you can create an account and get matches for other countries? :vulcan: I am going to bed soon. Tomorrow, I can see what I can come up for your country regarding where to watch Stargate.
