I have a friend who has always been religiously conservative, but holy cow she's gone all in on MAGA and QAnon. She's not the reason I've settled on being an atheist, but if I was ever asked, I'd cite her as an example. Ted Cruz, Rand Paul, Franklin Graham, Ben Shapiro, these are her "Christian" heroes.

I haven't heard her say anything about the Texas abortion law, but I'm sure she's throwing a party in her mind every time she thinks of it, never mind that she had a certain life-saving operation a while back that she would gleefully and willingly deny other women the opportunity to have.

...and they're your friend?

Didn't know she was like this until the pandemic. Considering everything she was fine with at the beginning of the pandemic compared to now, it's ikely that she fell down the Trump/QAnon rabbit hole during this time. But she has since moved, so I'll never see here again.

She realizes, though, that Shapiro is Jewish, right?

I'd say it's almost impossible. Because how could such a being have any kind of relationship with us beyond a person looking at an anthill? We would be unable to communicate in a reasonable fashion with such a being, nor they to us.

Why not? We find ways to communicate with cats and dogs.

One who believes in God could argue the stories in the Bible are equivalent to the way humans train dogs. Simplify the concept of morality and obedience to the level we can understand.

In my case, this is my parents. They've been getting worse and worse over the last two decades, but the last four years has really sent them off the cliff. :ack:

One of the things that made me realize/accept that I'm "culturally Catholic" is when a friend converted and didn't get any of the jokes. Or was horrified by what are basically folk practices. Have you seen Dogma? This is the perfect example - people raised in and around the Church figured out that the Bishop had blessed his golf clubs.

Well that doesn't sound all too great though. We humans on Earth are like Gods pets

In the Baha'i faith we call this progressive revelation. The idea that around the world at different points in history there were messengers who gave enough information to keep society progressing. But human nature being what it is, the message can get distorted over time. It periodically needs updating.

In a word: no.

TL;DR = Your conclusion does not follow from your hypothesis.

Depends how far you are willing to stretch the metaphor, and what angle you approach it.

Christians use the shepherd metaphor all the time. Is that really different from the one I’m making to also include the idea that he simplifies moral messages to ones humans understand to get us to behave?

When you say the lord is your shepherd, isn’t that another type of pet owner?

Re: Message needing to change over time.

You could argue that before modern protection and medicine was available, sex with several partners actually was immoral for public health reasons. Then humans added on all the moral purity stuff.

First of all, there are plenty of theists besides Christians, and there's a great deal of theological variation among them.

Evidently you're limiting yourself to particular types of relationships between God and man, namely those that fit what it is you're trying to assert. That's very circular. Not to mention, admitting that your statement depends on anything is an admission that it does not logically follow.

Finally [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pet]:

A pet, or companion animal, is an animal kept primarily for a person's company or entertainment rather than as a working animal, livestock or a laboratory animal.

That's the first sentence. Right off the bat, there is a fundamental distinction between pets and shepherded sheep.

I like that! Very sensible.
